I liked Dr. Martin immediately. He appears to be very kind and concerned. His credentials and experience are impressive. I had met Dr. Fallang at his information session, and would have liked for him to do my surgery, but he is no longer accepting Aetna insurance. Dr. Martin trained side-by-side with Dr. Fallang for a year, so he does the exact same procedure as Dr. Fallang. I feel very comfortable with Dr. Martin. I'm sure he is going to take very good care of me. My surgery is in 5 days. My insurance was approved immediately without even requiring a referral from my primary care physician (and I don't even have any other health risks like diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, etc.) The office staff is very nice. They return calls immediately and answer any silly question you may have. They gave me a very helpful booklet that lays everything out (it probably helps to cut down on post-op phone calls, unnecessary visits, etc.). I feel very well-informed, which makes me feel empowered! I'm ready to go!!

I haven't had the opportunity to meet Dr. Martin yet. I attended an informational session with his colleague, Dr. Fallang, in June, 2001. Dr. Fallang was very thorough (the session lasted nearly four hours). He covered what obesity was, the health risks of being overweight, the different weight loss procedures that have been performed over the years, the benefits and the complications of the Roux en Y procedure, etc. I anticpated that Dr. Fallang would be performing my surgery. However, Dr. Fallang performs the surgery at Sycamore Hospital whereas Dr. Martin utilizes Middletown Regional Hospital. Insurance approved both surgeons, but not both hospitals (see my response on insurance to read about the difficulty of getting approved). I can tell you that Paula from Dr. Fallang's office was great to work with while I was trying to get approved. So, Dr. Martin will be doing my surgery. I don't know much about him, so if there are any patients of his that would be willing to share with me, please do so!

Dr. Fallang holds an information session once a month. And it is definitely that. After attending all my questions were answered. Everyone on his staff is very helpful and supportive. They also have a support group meeting once every other month. I highly suggest attending any support group before surgery. I found it very helpful and even found my angel there. So far I have been satisfied with Dr. Fallang the only thing that I would like to do is to meet one on one with the dr prior to the history and physical that is scheduled 2-3 weeks before the surgery.

Dr. Fallang has added another surgeon to his practice. His name is Dr. Derrick Martin and he is going to do my surgery. I met with him on the 23rd for my history and physical. He is very nice and has a great sense of humor. He made me feel very comfortable and answered all of my questions.

My surgeon was Derrick Martin. What can I say He was probably one of the best Dr.'s that I have ever met. My first impression of him was what a cool Dr. My impression never changed. His bed side manner was like one of my family members. He was very up front and forward about all of the risk and complications that can occur from this surgery. I have not had any complications with my surgery and I owe it all to God number one and Dr. Martin. Thanks Dr. Martin.!!

Over all rating is a 9.5
The only thing i did not like is sometimes he jokes a little to much....thats not a bad thing but when your drugged up on your morphine you tend to take some jokes seriously ..;-)

I have not met my surgeon yet. I went to a group meeting by his partner Dr Fallang. Group meeting was very informative. I had expected Dr Fallang to do surgery, but since he is no longer doing surgery at Middletown hospital, and my insurance will only cover Middletown, after reading the boards, and research on Dr Martin, I felt confident in going ahead. The office has been nice, but it's very assembly line and efficient. Sort of like go with the flow and synchronized. But I guess with the demand they have for their services and expertise, they have no choice but to run their office that way.
Anyway, I'm meeting for preop meeting in November and will then update after meeting Dr Martin

I have been very pleased with Dr. Martin's care - before, day of, and post-op. He has demonstrated a high level of compassion and commitment to his patients. The staff in the Middletown office (He is in with Dr. Fallang) as well as the staff at his private office in Dayton have been wonderful!

(08/04/01) I was switched to the other surgeon in Dr. Fallang's practice, Dr. Martin. He was absolutely fabulous in the history and physical exam. He thoroughly explained the surgery to me again and was very reassuring. I am very happy with all aspects of their medical practice. All the assistants, receptionists, and nurses in the office have been very patient and supportive. (Even when I called every week to see where I was on the waiting list!!)

Dr. Fallang was recommended by a friend. She is recovering fabulously, which was the greatest recommendation I could have. I learned at his information session that he has performed the roux-en-Y procedure over 1000 times. His complication and mortality rates are extrememly low. (I'm not especially worried, but someone else out there might be.) He was an excellent speaker in the information session. He provided a history of gastric bypass surgeries and gave a lot of information about his medical philosophies. I was put at ease immediately. The aftercare program is VERY structured. They also emphasize the patient responsibility in aftercare, which I needed to hear. It's not magic. If I want to be healthy I have to take responsibility after this surgical jumpstart. My only complaint is the long wait for a surgery date - 4 months!!

I have not had the chance to meet Dr Martin. I did go to the information session with Dr. Falling. It was very informative and all questions were answered. My husband and I stayed after the meeting and also had a chance to have some additional questions answered. His honesty about complications were realistic. They do happen and every surgeon dreads them ,I feel he is very conscientous and his plan of treatment tries to avoid them. I am told per office staff that Dr. Martin practises the same as Dr. Falling. I do not believe there was a single thing addressed about aftercare. Since I live out of state, I will be unable to participate in an aftercare program through them. I do hope I can get involved with a group closer to home. I left the meeting with a sense of reassurance. I had gone to another information session closer to home and I felt it was a big sales pitch meeting. I did not feel this way with this session. I've had no problems with the office staff and they have also been very timely in getting my questions and concerns answered. I am looking forward to the surgery, but also more anxious about this than anything else I ever have done. I look forward to having it behind me and that I am on my way to a new and better and more healthier life.
