Bruce Thayer Bariatric Surgeon M.D.,F.A.C.S.

VI have only met him one time.er nice, kind, Office staff is friendly, helpfulknowledgeable. I have not found anything yet that I don't like about him.Aftercare and a wupport group is stressed. yes, he has a structured aftercare program. Explained that all surgery has risks.Addressed some risks through writing and others through a film.Sofar, I found him tobe fantastic. I don't have enought experience to rate him in these areas yet.
I had my second meeting with Dr. Thayer last Wednesday. He does not do surgery on people who gain wieght prior to surgery he told me "don't gain an ounce". That has really helped me put on the brakes.

I finally met with the surgical team @ NWH yesterday, Dr. Thayer seemed great, I also liked everyone that I met on his staff. I met with the Psycologist, Nutritionist & the Surgeon all in one appointment, which I found extremely helpfull as well as time saving. I have been tentatively schedulded for Dec. 3rd. I am hoping & praying for an earlier date, which I am told does happen every once in a while when someone cancels.I am very anxious to get started. I found Dr. Thayer very caring, friendly & encouraging as well as on time, which is hard to find in most doctors offices. I arrived an hour early, so that was the only waiting period other than a few minutes between specialists. His office really emphasizes the support group meetings before & after the surgery & are adimant about follow-up appointments & really sticking to the first month diet after surgey to avoid any complications or dumping & purging episodes. They also show a video explaining the types of surgery available while you wait, which was also informative.
I originally was trying to get into the program @ NEMC/Dr. Shikora, but have been waiting since Jan. 2001 for my first appointment!
I will keep updating my information as it progresses.

i could tell Dr. Thayer was a nice man right from the beginning.
the staff in the office is incredible! they are all extremely nice!
i liked his sense of humor and the fact that he's funny, it helped me relax.
they should know that he is on their side and will do what ever possible to make their journey run smoothly.
he emphasizes aftercare strongly and the aftercare program is structured. the entire staff works with you very closely. i like that a lot.
he addresses the risks of surgery with seriousness but at the same time he makes it clear that there is nothing to be afraid of.
overall, i would say he's excellent!
i believe both his competence and bedside manner are great!!

A friend recomended Dr. Thayer and she couldn't say enough about how great he was. When I had my initial consultation, I saw what she was talking about. He was very kind and sympathetic to my needs, but also up front and to the point.
His staff is also awesome to deal with. They are very knowledgeable and helpful. I didn't have to do a thing to get insurance approval, they took care of it for me.
As my friend did, I would also highly recomend Dr. Thayer to anyone looking to have WLS!!

I met Dr. Thayer on Wednesday, 5/16/01. I found everyone in his office to be very upbeat, professional and knowledgable. Dr. Thayer has a quick wit and caring demeanor. I was completely comfortable with him. He has a wonderful reputation as a surgeon as well as a great aftercare program. I have spent the past 10 months researching so I had a lot of information which saved a lot of time asking questions.

(Note - I first attempted to have my WLS with Dr Shikora at NEMC in Boston. Although I was very impressed with them and their program, I was unable to follow through with the pre op weight loss they required, and after a year, I left, and went to Dr Bruce Thayer, in Newton.)I had my first appt with Dr thayer in march, 2001 - it was long, but at the end of it, I had a surgery date (July 2001). He and his staff were very friendly, professional and seemed really competant. I got a call that they had a cancellation in April, and I had my surgery April 19. His staff run support groups twice a month, and they ask you to commit to going to them. I've been to one so far, and it was a real help. The surgery itself went very well, and I was out of the hospital in 4 days - I could have stayed another day if I had wanted to. When, a week after surgery, I thought I might have a wound infection, I went in and saw Dr Reines, his partner. I have never had any trouble reaching the office or the doctors with any medical questions- they have been very available. Dr Reines follow up care was very thorough - he ran lots of tests, and even hospitalized me overnight on antibiotics. He said he didn't want to wait a day until the tests came back to find out I was fighting an infection. As it turned out, there was no infection, so I was able to go home the next day.
dr Thayer took out the staples the next week. he reviewed what I was eating with me, asked lots of questions. he was pleased with my weight loss and general health, and he clapped me on the back and said, "You are a horse!" - I know he meant well, so I didn't take offense.

3/27/01 I have my first appointment tomorrow. I will update with my impressions.
3/28/01 I can't say enough about Dr. Thayer and his staff. They were professional, knowledgeable and very nice! Because of the nature of this type of surgery, the waiting room erupted into a mini Q&A/support group. Everyone seemed to encourage you to ask questions and no question was too small or treated as not worthwhile. I had done a great deal of research, and asked some pointed question, I think there was an emphasis on the positives of the surgery, but felt that they gave a well rounded presentation. The only negative, if it is one, would be that there is a little bit of an assembly line feel to the process. You meet with the psychologist, the nutritionist, and the surgeon all in one day. However, while the office was busy, when you were with the individuals, you did not feel rushed.

3/21/01-Today was my first meeting with Dr. Thayer, and I must say, I loved him!! LOL The psychologist and dietician were also extremely nice as were the whole staff. They all stressed how this is a "tool" and not a magical cure : ) I felt as though I have known Dr. Thayer for a long time, he makes you feel that at ease. Ask questions too, everyone is open and honest about everything. The patients in the waiting area were all friendly and eager to tell their stories. You will feel right at home!!!
