Bruce Thayer Bariatric Surgeon M.D.,F.A.C.S.

When I first Bruce Thayer I was 93 years old and living in a nursing home. He is a kind and compasionate man he there when you need support and encouragement and also too keep you in line and make you work for your life .He and his staff were always very helpfull through out this process and that is a great help when you make this major life change because it is yet that . I now live 150 miles away in vermont and I still bug him for help and I know that I am not in his area but the support is there if I need it. I do attend some meetings ther if I can rearrage my schedule and the y make me remeber and kick start me even this far out. 3years out!!!!! He is currently working to get me some revisional surgery closer to where I now live because my insurance will not allow me to see him any more He is the best thing to happen to my life, because I truly believe I would have died by now either from my obesity and or my Bipolar diese if I had not met and worked him and all the staff there. There is no one thing that he does best only that he makes you believe in yoursewlf and even when you think things are grim he always has the time and smile make the sun shine again. I bless god every day for leading him into my life and anyone who gets involved will too.

I have only had one visit with Dr. Thayer. He is a soft spoken man who seemed very kind.He did call me at home to find out my PCPs' address and he was as nice on the phone. The office staff was very nice and they seemed to have a good scheduling plan because there wasn;t very much waiting for anyone.

2002 - Dr. Robinson was referred to me by two friends who have had recent, successful WLS. In all fairness, my first visit to his office did not start off well with parking issues, not being seen until almost 60 minutes after my scheduled time, and what I felt to be a dirty exam room.
The PA seemed very knowledgable, although rushed through everything so quickly that if I hadn't already known what she was talking about, I would have been lost.
I saw Dr. Robinson for probably a total of 5 minutes after the PA had briefed me on everything. I had hoped to spend much more time with him, but suppose I understand that he very busy and much of this surgery has now become routine.
All in all, I am happy with my choices with doctor and hospital. I've had personal experiance with Brigham and Women's hospital before, and always found them to be top-notch. Although as previously mentioned I would have liked to speak with Dr. Robinson at more length, the time I was with him I found him to be personable.
I live about 90 minutes from Boston (on Cape Cod), so plan to have all post op visits (after the staple removal) overseen by my personal physician here on the Cape.
3/28/03 - After waiting nearly a year and being within two weeks of my scheduled surgery date, I have switched hospitals and surgeons. I became uncomfortable with Dr. Robinson for a couple reasons.
He is not at this time a member of the ASBS, which I feel is an important commitment.
I did not find him to be personable, compassionate or even understanding of the complexities of obesity.
These feelings are a result of my own experiences and not based on any negative information I have heard from anyone else.
I met Dr. Thayer at Newton Wellesley for the first time last night at a support group meeting and was very impressed with both him and the gastric bypass progam.
Dr. Thayer is very approachable and seems to truly understand the psychological, physical and social aspects of being obese. He is very supportive and he stressed that he and his staff intend to stay involved in your post op care for life. I feel very comfortable with doctor Thayer and the program at Newton Wellesley.

The first time I meet Dr. Thayer I liked him right away, he has a great personalty. Everyone in the office has been very supportive and caring. I was very well informed about all the risk's as well as what to except after.
After surgeory he was on top of everything. I was even more impressed that he called me at home to see how I was doing as well as calling me the night before my surgery. I can't say enough about how fantastic everyone at the office as been.

Well, I have to say I was happy when Susan Thayer (Dr. Thayer's wife and the nurse there) called me to tell me they had a cancellation for August 28th and offered me the appointment ... my original date for consult was Dec.12th, lol big difference. The office itself isn't that big, considering how many people they had coming and going and it IS an obesity clinic. I waited 1 1/2 hours for my appointment ... they warm you that you will be at the appointment for about 4 hours. One thing that was nice was that even though you are waiting a long time, it is easy to chat with others in the office since you are all there for the same thing. At the first appointment you see the Psychologist, the nutitionist, and then the surgeon. I was surprised I only spent about 15 minutes with the psychologist. Then they have you watch a video about the types of surgery and complications. Then they usually have you see the nutritionist then the surgeon. I saw the surgeon first though because he was avaiable before the nutritionist. Dr. Thayer seemed nice, he had a good sense of humor. He asked if I had a any questions then told me he would see me probably a couple of times before surgery since it was 4 months away. You are not allowed to gain any weight before surgery or they will postpone it. The nutritionist weighs you and takes a "before" pic then chats about your diet and what you can do to change it and make it better. Everyone in the office was very friendly, although at times it did feel as though it were an assembly line because of all the people. I am looking forward to my next appointment with Dr. Thayer Oct. 30th ... I should be having my surgery in January. I will keep you updated. Update: I had my surgery January 6, 2003. Now that I have gone through the whole process my veiws on Dr. Thayer are a little more enlightened. He is a great surgeon ... but don't expect to get that warm and fuzzy feeling from him, because he is not that type. He is very matter -a-fact, will tell you exactly what's on his mind and a lot of times he is not very tactful. In truth, I find his him to be a bit cocky, a quality I truely dislike, however, that does not take away from the fact that he is GREAT surgeon. If you are looking for a more sensitive surgeon, he is probably not the one for you ;o)Mind you, these are all my own personal views :o)

i havent met my surgeon yet. i attended a support group at newton welsley. the team was introduced and i found the group to be friendly and very informitive. i have my first consultation appointment on may 14 2 days before my 32 birthday. i have run into a road block. my pcp wont refer to anyone but dr. edward mun. i called his office over 4 weeks ago and have heard nothing. i am searching for a new pcp that will refer me to dr. thayer. many post ops attended the group and spoke very highly of the team and the support before during and post op. i hope to have more to tell soon.

Bruce Thayer is a kind and caring doctor. He truly cares about his patients and their concerns. He has a gentle but truthful bedside manner. My first impression of him was of a kind soul with a gift of helping those who have no other options for weight loss. He is firm with his patients as far as his prr-op and post-op instructions. His policy is to see you on a sceduled basis for life. I would highly recommend him to anyone at anytime.

DR. THAYER AND HIS OFFICE STAFF HAVE ONLY ONE THING ON THEIR MIDS AND THAT IS TO PROVIDE EVERYONE THAT COMES INTO THE OFFICE A FEELING OF HOPE THAT WITH THIER KNOWLEDGE AND HELP YOU TOO CAN BE A HEALTHIER THINNER YOU. ON YOUR FIRST VISIT TO THE OFFICE YOU SEE THE DIETICIAN,PHSYCOLOGIST,AND THE DR. THAYER AND HIS STAFF DONT TREAT YOU LIKE A NUMBER AND THEY ARE VERY WILLING TO ANSWER ANY AND ALL QUESTIONS YOU MAY HAVE I GUESS THIS MAY BE WHY HIS OFFICE IS SO BUSY AND HIS SURGERY DATES ARE AT LEAST 4 TO 5 MONTHS OUT.
