Bruce Thayer Bariatric Surgeon M.D.,F.A.C.S.

My 1st impression of Dr. Thayer was... Is he married? He is a sweetheart. Made me feel so comfortable in such and uncomfortable situation. His office was neat and clean.. his staff was bubbly and friendly.. there was nothing about my experience for my consultation that was negative...maybe the wait till surgery... I wish I could just have it done next week... I cant wait for surgery..

I didnt know what to expect from Dr Thayer when went to my evaluation, Once meeting him, I was completely impressed not only by how h explained things to me , but his personality. He made me feel very at ease, answered all of my questions, in terms that i could understand them. What impressed me the most and made me know even more that I had chose the right surgeon for me, was that Dr Thayer himself called me the night before surgery, asking if i had any questions, asking how i was, helped me through a little bit of the anxouness i was feeling at the moment :)
The Staff at Newton Wellesley Obesity Center is astounding. They really care about each patient and their progress, never oce have i called and felt as if what question i have had was something i should have already known, they constantly are reassuring me to call for anyreason !!!
Ask Questions, If your not sure .. ask the staff and all the surgeons are there for you, do not be afraid to ask.. they really want to know how you are feeling and what is going on with you at the moment!!!
THe pre care and after care program are awesome!!! They give you a binder with all sorts of information about the surger and what is ecpected of you and of them prior too and afterthe surgery..
I really cant say enough good things about newton wellesley Obesity Center. Overall, My experience so far has been far beyond what i ever expected from a drs office :)

My first impression of Dr. Thayer, is that he was a very busy man. When I met with him however, he made me feel as if I was the only patient he was concerned about and that he truly wanted to help. His office staff is abolutely wonderful. Everyone is helpful and treats you like the person you are. I have to say the nurse Sue, is probably the sweetest, most compassionate, wonderful person. She is so positive and encouraging, she is truly an asset to the practice and patients. I honestly can't think of anything I did not like about Dr. Thayer or his staff. The only think I didn't like overall was the long wait time for the first initial appointment (roughly 3-4 hours as you meet with the nutritionist and psychologist as well). Furture patients should know they are in great hands with Dr. Thayer and the rest of the staff. Aftercare is very important to this doctor. It is emphasised that just because surgery is over, that doesn't mean that they shouldn't you again. A series of appointments are set up through the 3 year post-op mark. Sue the dietician and Cynthia the psychologist make it a point to let each person know that they are always there if we have a question, that we shouldn't have to go through this alone. The risks of surgery were addressed through a videotape and a packet of information you are required to read. Over all, I would give Dr. Thayer the highest rating possible. He had a great bedside manner and truly seemed to care, as well as being a very highly regarded surgeon.

I loved Dr. Thayer from the first minute I met him. He made me feel totally comfortable with myself and the surgery. He answered all of my questions in depth and made a special effort to completely explain the procedure, risks, benefits, etc. The office staff was exceptional as well. Everyone went over and above. Was nice to feel comfortable in a doctor's office, unlike other times when I felt I was being judged because of my weight.
I particularly liked the program Dr. Thayer has. They do not treat just obesity, they treat the whole person; nutritionally, emotionally, physically. I felt they really care about their patients.
I definitely would recommend Newton-Wellesley Obesity Associates to anyone. They are THE BEST !!!!!!! Thank you guys for you compassion.

Yesterday I had my first meetings in Dr. Thayer's office. We arrived at eleven, checked in, and in a short time saw Cindy Worth, the staff psychologist.
She went over with me all the failed attempts I'd made to lose weight, when I first noticed myself as different, and why I think I'm obese. She was pretty skilled in asking questions, and in understanding what I was saying. I was honest with her that I think the surgery is a rather brutal, drastic thing to do, but I don't see an alternative for myself if I'm not going to die young. She passed me anyway.
Another wait, and a meeting with Sue Miller, the group's dietitian. She went over roughly what eating would be like during the stages of life after surgery. She's a warm person who doesn't minimize the fact that a person will have a changed life after surgery, but she's positive, and characterizes it as constructive work rather than difficulty. She says that to be successful after the critical medical supervision post-surgery, a person needs to be not perfect but attentive, and tending in the right direction the majority of the time.
Sue also went over my two day food list (which was honest, and therefore atrocious)and didn't say anything rude about how much I eat. :-b
Another short wait and a meeting with Dr. Thayer, who is sweet and discerning. Asked a few questions about my general health, and got quite specific about a couple of things. He asked about smoking and alcohol (I'm innocent on both counts)and said he will NOT do surgery on a smoker. I was given some assignments to accomplish before we met again (take a prescribed cardio stress test, ask my primary care physician something).
We had seen a short video about the surgery and its complications during one of our waits, and my husband was concerned about a few things. Dr. Thayer put the statistics in perspective for us, and was very specific about patients he'd had who had problems.
There followed a very short physical examination--the doctor poked my stomach, said my liver wasn't too big, and I was done.
I was given an exit interview by Sue, a staff nurse, and she went over with me how wonderful it would be if I were to begin positive behaviors NOW. When she asked how I relieve stress, I told her about my parrots, and she is a BIRD person, as is at least one other member of the staff!! YOWZA!!
Sue gave me my "passport"--a green binder full of information which I must have on hand when it's wanted--to lose it is to risk surgical postponment or worse!
Downstairs to have some blood drawn (more bird people--YAAAY!) and we were out of there at four.
I give Dr. Thayer and his team my highest compliments. One thing I noticed is that each person in the line listened not only to me, but seemed to pay attention to the comments of the person who had seen me before.
I feel secure with all of these people.

Dr Thayer and his office are highly professional and competent. Each visit has reinforced my initial impression.
The staff is friendly and happy to answer any questions.
My only small complaint would be that, because this is such a busy practice, I sometimes feel that I'm imposing on their time when asking questions.
I feel completely safe in Dr. Thayer's hands. While his bedside manner is not exactly warm, there is no question in my mind that he is an excellent surgeon. Since so much of his practice is dedicated to WLS, I know that he will be prepared for any and all scenarios. To me this is much more important than a warm and fuzzy bedside manner.
The whole program, from initial evaluation, surgery risk information and future complication details leaves you well educated.

Dr. Thayer is my angel. From the second I met him I know he was the perfect surgeon for me and I was right. He took great care of me before, during and after surgery. He truly cares about his patients as people and I know this is the beginning of a life long relationship that I with forever cherish. I highly recommend him to anyone thinking of having this life saving surgery. You will be in the best care there is.

Dr. Thayer and his team are great. I went to his office well prepared with tons of questions and a need for security. I also researched WLS a great deal before going to let him know how serious I really was. He was caring and honest and that is what counts. The staff did everything and I just showed up...I signed forms and got a date on the spot.
Other than a sweet guy and staff, the best thing is that you see everyone you have to in one visit. You meet with different specialist (nutritionist and psycholgist) at that visit.
Dr. Thayer expressed how important it was to go to the group therapy sessions once a month and how important the lifelong changes were going to be. He was straightforward about risk and the aftercare demands that this proceduce brings into your "new" life.
I am glad I chose Dr. Thayer and his staff to be the people to help change my life for the better.
