Henry Pearce Bariatric Surgeon M.D.

Dr. Pearce was a very kind, attentive man who was truly interested in helping those willing to reach out. He was willing to listen to questions and personal history information and take as much time as necessary for you to feel comfortable. His office staff was exceptional at returning calls and always friendly and smiling. Dr. Pearce has a wonderful beside manner and works very closely with the local support group. He was very open and honest about the surgery risks and possible complications although none arose for me. Dr. Pearce is fabulous and I would recommend him to everyone.

I my initial consulation on May 24 at 1:00. The people I've dealt with on the phone have been very nice and helpful. It did take me almost a month to get my packet, but once I got it, I didn't really know what to do with it. It was mainly just a little bit of paperwork.
My first impression of Dr Pearce wasn't the best seeing how I had to wait 2 1/2 hours past my initial appointment time and he didn't apologize for being so late...but in retrospect and after I actually got to talk to him that changed and was soon forgotten. He's a very nice man, very thorough....I would feel completely at ease with him doing my surgery. He didn't say anything I wasn't prepared to hear, and he didn't discourage me in the least. His office is gorgeous and his staff is incredibly nice and they made me feel extrememly at ease. I didn't meet Darrel, but I've heard such great things about him I'm confident he'll get my insurance approval going. I'm not so much concerned with his personality as with his expertise and knowledge of the surgery and I wholeheartedly believe that he is by far the best choice available to me for this surgery. He's done this for 30 years, he willing gave me examples of complications, case histories of reversals he'd done...only 3 in literally thousands of operations....Overall I am extremely happy about my choice and I feel confident that he will see me through this safely....and that's all that really matters to me.

I first met Dr. Pearce at a group seminar he held to handle the back-log of patients that were waiting to see him. I'd say it is much more beneficial to attend a meeting like this because I learned a lot from the questions others asked. His offices were very nice and his staff was very helpful. Dr. Pearce answered all of our questions about the surgery and informed us of the risks associated as well. He told us what to expect post-op. The only criticism I have (which is minor) is that while I was waiting for my insurance approval, Dr. Pearce's insurance staff people were not nearly as helpful as the rest of his staff had been. I later found out that they are swamped and are trying to hire an additional staff person.
On the day of my my surgery, Dr. Pearce took the time to talk to my family members prior to the operation. This really made an impression on them and on me as well. He checked on me while I was in the hospital and has a very good bedside manner.
Prior to the surgery and after he released me, his office provided me with post-op materials about what to eat following WLS surgery. These materials were rather weak, but the support group that I am involved in is working to provide better information to his office. His aftercare involves follow up visits to his office approximately once a month for the first year following surgery. I've only been to one, but I am currently 4 weeks post-op.
Overall, I feel that I am so lucky to have chosen the Roux En Y surgical procedure for weight loss, and I am grateful that Dr. Pearce was in my hometown to do the surgery. He's an excellent surgeon and has been doing this particular proceedure for 15-20 years. I would recommend him.

I haven't met the Doctor yet, but I did talk to his insurance clerk, Darrell. He is just as helpful as everyone has said! I'll update this after my consult appointment!
Update! 1/26/01
I met with Dr. Pearce yesterday! He is so warm and understanding! He spent about an hour and a half with me, explaining many things to me! He says he's done over 2,000 WLS!! WOW! He even mentioned one death, a young woman about 20 yrs ago, that died because of contracting hepatitis (sp?) from a blood transfusion! Otherwise, there have been no other deaths associated with his surgeries! That makes me feel really good! I was very comfortable with Dr. Pearce and he was very willing to listen to all my questions and comments! I'd recommend him very highly!

4-22-01 I'm staying with Dr. Pearce!! I had thought about changing to Dr. Gorospe, but since I have been approved with Dr. P, I plan on just staying with him. One thing I have to say is, I wish Dr. P transects the stomach. I am going to ask him to do mine, but I doubt he will. He told me at my consult he doesn't feel it is necessary. Oh well!!!
