James Colberg Bariatric Surgeon M.D., F.A.C.S.

Dr. Colberg has been personable and informative throughout my two consultations. At times he does seem to have a rote way of explaining things, but I suppose that's what happens when you say the same things hundreds of times over. He only does the open procedure and it's a modified RNY...he doesn't remove or detach anything. I like this less radical approach, although I kind of wish he did the surgery laproscopically.

Dr. Colberg is a sweetheart. I felt comfortable immediately. His knowledge and explanations were valuable. He explained everything thoroughly. I was forwarned about the long wait in the office but I appreciate that he takes his time with each patient. He has a wonderful bedside manner. Pat, his office assistant is also wonderful. She knows her stuff. During the long wait (2 hours) I got to talk to other patients who had the surgery and that gave me confidence before even meeting him. Everyone has had successful results from their surgeries and more important no regrets! They all had researched other surgeons and agreed, hands down, that Dr. Colberg was definately the best. He emphasizes aftercare and has a structured aftercare program. He does let you know the facts! the risks! and what would happen if you don't follow through. He has many years of experience. So far, I give him a "10" I am now having pre op testing done and will meet back with him in about 3 weeks. Then as long as everything is o.k. and my insurance accepts, I will be scheduled for surgery in another 2-3 weeks.

Spoke with Pat, nurse/administrativr assistant , whom I must say is as every bit as nice ans helpful as she is described on this site :) I have my consult date for May 30th and Pat has assured me I can have the procedure done this summer as well, so as to not intefere with my return to school work in trhe fall.

I have met twice with Dr Colberg, I found him to be both thorough and proffessional. The office staff consist of Pat and she could not be more friendly or helpful.I think future Patients should know that Dr. Colberg will order a lot of testing and will not put you at risk of surgery until your health Is in the best shape possible.
Aftercare was dicussed in mt first meeting with the Doctor, he has a set regime and expects good results if you follow it. The doctor addressed all the risk of surgery completely and without hesitation. I rate Dr Colberg on a scale of 1 to10 and 11. I don't think I have ever been so impressed with a surgeon.

Dr. Colberg is GREAT! He was very personable and very funny.
He put all of my fears and concerns at ease. He answered ALL
of my questions (some times twice)and didn't make me feel rushed
or uncomfortable even if I asked an off the wall question.
He made me feel very safe and had a genuine concern about my health.
His office manager Pat was extremely helpful too. They make you feel
as if you are a member of their medical family.
I would recommed him to anyone.

i think he is a excellent surgeon. he is very open and honest.no i still fell the same.pat his secretary
is great. she is helpful and very happy.you will help you in anyway she can. i have nothing bad to say about the surgeon or pat.he stresses aftercare because so u can make sure everything is healing okay and to make sure you are not going to do something you are not suppose to.yes the surgeon is very he explains everything to you very well. his surgical competence and his bed side manner are excellent. i would not choose any other surgeon but him. james colberg is going to save my life. he is such a lifesaver. i am finally feeling happy about life and on my way to getting healthy and a better life style. he is the best!!!!

Dr. Colberg is very caring and concerned with his patients, a rare delight in a surgeon!
He does require all pre-ops to have extensive outside testing done, so be prepared to get poked and prodded.
I was impressed that he visited me in the hospital each day, even after the residents had a gawk at me. Most surgeons of any kind do not bother with this.
His office manager, Pat is good at her job. She wrote the letter that got me approved for surgery and warned me that Personal Choice would deny my pre-op consults; yet she didn't ask for up-front money.
Dr. Colberg requires follow up visits throughout your first year post op. He will let you know how and what to eat and drink and what type of vitamin supplementation you should be getting. However, keep in mind that he is a surgeon, not a nutritionist, and his knowledge in that area is somewhat limited. You may want to consider a visit with a nutritionist that has experience working with RNY patients.
The entire staff at Jefferson Hospital works together well. Surgery is not an easy thing for anybody to go through, but I felt everyone I crossed paths with at Jeff was caring and gentle; and most of all respectful. It made a world of difference to me at the time! I would recommend Colberg to others considering RNY.

Dr. Colberg was wonderful right from the start. Being a R.N. I had alot more questions than some other patients and my personal physician has never had a patient that has had this surgery so she armed me with some questions of her own. Dr. Colberg answered every one of them and never made me feel rushed. This is how he is with everyone which is why his office hours are always behind! But once you have had your first appointment with him you understand and the wait is just a given not a bother. My impression of him has just gotten better over time. He saw me personally pre-operatively and every day post-op. His office "staff" is the one woman show named Pat. She is as awesome as he is. She is extremely helpful, knowledgeable andgood at writing letters! There is nothing I didn't like about him, even 7 months later. He is adamant about aftercare and discusses it from the second sentence of the first meeting. On a scale of 1-10 I would rate him a 10+...

my first impresssion of the dr. was one of confidence
in time i became very comfortable with him, which
increased my confindence in him. his office staff
(Pat)is wonderful. she takes time to explain help,
and guide you through the process. future
patients should know that they are in good hands
so relax. he has a very streuctured after care which
includes group meetings, support groups, and a personal
lists of patients(former and current)that you can call
and talk to about what ever is bothering you.
he is vert thorough on explaining the risks
of surgery.dr. colberg gets a 10.
both competency and bed side manner are great
