Marco Patti Bariatric Surgeon M.D., F.A.C.S.

Dr. Patti was very professional at my consultation. He answered all my questions with ease. He seemed to like the fact that I was prepared with knowledge and questions. I was assured by his professionalism and expertise. Be aware he is a STICKLER for the 10% weight loss!
Unfortunately, his schedule is so full that I was not able to get a surgery date before my insurance changes from an HMO to PPO at the end of January. His staff was not too concerned about my predicament(I'm sure they hear from people wanting dates sooner all the time!!) until I started sobbing loudly in the waiting room. (I am a single mom, working full-time, and going to school full-time in the evenings....I can barely afford the neccessities let alone the co-pay on a PPO plan.) Much to their credit they are currently working on getting me a January 2002 date! I am praying.........

Haven't had the chance to meet him yet. He is probably a great doctor but I am not looking forward to San Francisco. My insurance only contracts with UCSF for this surgery. uggg I will update after meeting with him. Sometime in July or Aug.
7/18/01 I met with Dr. Ostroff yesterday and Karen. These are two wonderful people that I am so glad to have met. I now have all my appointments to take care of and on to the surgeon I go. Kelly
Met Dr. Patti on 9/25/01, I thought he was great. Everyone I have met so far in this process has been fantastic. My surgery date is Nov. 7th and I am excited.
11/26/01 Dr. Patti is just wonderful and the staff at UCSF were great.

I will be having the surgery with Dr. Patti but I had the consult with Dr. Ostroff he was very blunt and explained the future and some concerns with weight gain, I did have all my questions answered and all went well. He was pretty nice and his staff mainly Karen was very nice and friendly. They do emphasize aftercare and exercise. They tell about all risks and seem very competent.

Dr. Patti was nice, however I felt like he was speaking to me as if I were 5 years old. He was very honest about the risks associated with weight loss surgery. To be honest, I was only with him for about 10 minutes, then I was passed on to an administrator to fill out paperwork and get my date. He did not speak to me about aftercare yet. Maybe that will be at my actual pre-op appointment the day before my surgery. I think I have learned more about the risks, aftercare, and the surgery itself from this website and my local support group than I did from my surgeon. I am going to wait until I actually have my surgery to give him an overall rating, because so many things can happen between then and now.

I have not met the surgeon yet. I have to first meet with Dr. Ostroff for an initial screening which is on June 21st. Will update after this appointment.
8/27/01 - met with Dr. Ostroff and Karen on June 21st. Had lost the weight, have now completed other requirements and have an appt. with Dr. Patti on Sept. 25th. I saw Dr. Patti at the last support group meeting at UCSF and formed a very positive opinion about him so far. I know he is a very busy man and I was impressed that he showed up at the meeting. Maybe I am naieve to be impressed, but I thought he was very "down to earth" and not arrogant at all like some surgeons can be.

I first met with Dr. ostroff. He evaluates each candidate. I had to have the usual mental evaluation, and heart stress test. I also was required to loose 20 pounds. My appointment took about 3 months to get and then after I met all the requirments I had to wait another 3 to actually met with the surgeon. I met Dr. Patti on 7-26-01 I thought he was thorough and answered all of my questions. My surgery is scheduled for 8-22-01

Dr. Patti is a VERY busy man I tell you. It is a very strict program with set protocols that seem mean and unnecessary but are for the best when one is on the other side and has a date.
You can't see Dr. Patti until you have completed EVERYTHING you are required to do, then you get to see him and he gives you a date for surgery if he feels you are a good candidate for this surgery (RNY).
These things are,
1. a 10% weight loss (10% being of your weight)documented.
2. a psyche evaluation
3. a cardiac stress evaluation, done by a cardiologist
4. (not required but is a plus) no gallbladder
Thats all I can remember w/out looking at my papers but thats pretty much it.
The staff and such take care of everything I haven't had to deal with insurance or anything it's been really nice!

First impression was he was calm and direct. My impression did not change with time. His receptionist at the time was not a very nice person, and I had a hard time getting a hold of his surgery coordinator. The thing I like least..............the hoop's they make you jump through for the surgery to even be considered. I really really liked Leslie, she was great! Like the weight loss prior to surgery thing. I mean obviously I didnt go from nothing to surgery in one day. I had tried much less invasive things in the past. He is moderate on the aftercare part. The aftercare doesnt seem very structured but then maybe there is more they will say after surgery. He did address all risks for this surgery with me! I rate him a 9 on a 1 to 10. I think his surgical competence is the best.

Met with DR Patti on 6/12/01 he was very nice and went over my health with me and what type of procedure he would try to use for my surgery. Asked me if I had any questions and then sent me out to his office staff to book my surgery appt. I've also seen him at 2 of the monthly group meetings held at UCSF by Karen from Dr Ostroff's office. He was very friendly and truely interested and concerned with everyone that was there asking questions about the surgery. He offers advice and answer all questions asked of him while he is there and tries to be at most meetings from what I've heard. My next meeting with him will probably be for my surgery. I can hardly wait.
