Dr. Carter is a great man. He really talks to you and tells you the full detail of the surgery. He listens and answers all the questions you have for him. The office staff is very friendly. I would rate Dr. Carter so far a 10 out of a 10. He is very well mannered. He will give you his beeper number to call him anytime of the day or night after surgery. He emphazizes on calling him no matter what if you feel something is wrong.

I liked Dr Carter right off the bat. He is very friendly and explains everything in great detail. Before and after surgery care etc.

He greatly emphasizes aftercare, that this surgery is a lifetime commitment.

He discussed the risks in great detail, and explained the procedure.

I'm alittle disappointed in the office staff tho, they are quick to get you off the phone if you have a question or need info.

I haven't had the surgery yet, but I would give him a 10 so far!!

Dr. Carter, is a wonderful Doctor/Surgeon. If it wasnt for him meeting me in the emergency room and taking care of me due to a leakage from the surgery. After 3 additional surgeries and approx. 25 days in the hospital, Dr. Carter saved my life. Dr. Carter is not my original bariatric surgeon, but now is my Doctor. He is a wonderful man, he listens, talks to you and lets you know how it is. I do appreciate him for all his knowledge and caring concerns he has for his patients.
I had an extremely tough start, but things through time is getting better. If I had it all to do over again...YES I would do it again! However, I would most definately have gone to Dr. Carter vs. my original surgeon.

Thank you So much for being there when I needed you most Dr. Carter. ;-}

My first impression was very good of Dr. Carter. He took a long time explaining the proceedure and risks to us. He gave me the list of things to do to get my insurance approval. The office staff was very nice and understood that I had to bring a toddler LOL.

I am very pleased with Dr Carter. He really cares about his patients and you really don't feel like you are at a doctor's office. It is hard to describe how his office is but not like any other I have been too. Future patients should be warned that you will have to be on a liqiud protein diet before surgery he wants to make sure you are willing to do your part before he does his. Overall he is a 10 even though I have never met any of the other surgeons I looked into and even made appointments with.

I had my first appointment with Dr. Carter on November 21, 2002 and I felt real comfortable with him. He has been doing this type of surgery since the 1970's and he takes a lot of time with his patients. I saw him again on December 18, 2002 and I still felt really good about picking him. His office staff for the most part seem to be okay, his wife Mary is very helpful and nice. I guess the thing that I like the least about him is that you wait a long time to see him but once you get to him he really takes his time and he is a surgeon so I personally feel the long wait is to be expected. I think future patients should know that he is a very experienced surgeon, who really seems to care about his patients. He said that aftercare for Gastric Bypass is for the rest of your life yearly visits and during the first year it will be monthly visits. He goes over all of the risks of having the surgery as well as the risks of not having the surgery. Plus you see him at least 3 times before you even get to the surgery date part of the process, so you have plenty of time to make sure that this is for you. At this point in the process I would rate him at about a 9 on a scale of 1 to 10 but I'm now waiting to see if I'm approved by my insurance company for my surgery. Once I have the surgery then I can rate the surgery and the care after the surgery. I think surgical competence is best but it is wonderful when it is with a surgeon who has a great bedside mannor as well and at this point I fell Dr. Carter has them both. This is just my personal opinion at this point.

03/17/03 Today Shelia called me from Dr. Carter's office and told me that I'm approved for my surgery and when I go in for my appointment this Friday I will get my surgery date. I'm so excited that I can't stant it and I can't wait to see it in writing so it will really become real.

Spoke so far, only over the phone with the staff... they were very nice and have had several calls from other patients of Dr Olchowski's that got a delay in their surgery. I have an appt in a few days and IM EXCITED that i got the appt so quick !!

5-2-02 had first appt with Dr Carter. He is Kind, and really cares about his patients... He makes you feel like you are the only patient he has. He concentrates on YOU when he is with you. His wife runs the office and she is wonderful ! Kind, Friendly and willing to do what ever it takes to help. Sheila does the insurance and she is also GREAT ! Dr Carter explains everything in great depth of how and why he does this surgery the way he does. He wants you still closley monitored AFTER the surgery as well. When you go home, he gives you his beeper number to call him if ANYHTHING feels strange or differant. Would not Change my mind on him doing my surgery.. I am 200% sure he is the right surgeon for me.

5-9-02 Shiela called and gave me my surgery date for May 17th and I am SOO relieved to finally have a date.. kind a makes it more real that way !.. She and Mrs. Carter worked hard to get all the insurance stuff done... they are WONDEFUL!!!

I had interviewed other surgeons before Dr. Carter. His office is sparse and dated, but I think it is an indication of the fact that his "business" is in the hospital. He was kind and knowledgeable and answered all my questions before I had a chance to ask. He spent a lot of time with me going over all the details of the surgery. His demeanor and quiet confidence let me know I wanted him to do my surgery. I feel confident that he will do the best job possible. He stresses the fact that I will be seeing him often as I need to refer to him for much of my aftercare. He will give me a beeper to call him if I have problems after the procedure.

I never felt I made a wrong decision with Dr. Carter. Everyone at the hospital talked of his legendary dedication. He would be in the wards and surgery at all times of the day and night. I would see him at 2 in the morning and at noon and then at 6 or 8 at night. I have no idea when this man rests. Nothing seems to shake him or ruffle his feathers. He is a fine and caring surgeon and no prima donna.

Dr. Carter has no structured aftercare program per se. He wants to see you often after your procedure and will help you through the physical part of your ordeal. There is no support for the mental aspects of what you will confronting.

The jury is still out as far as his staff is concerned. I can't tell if they are confused or just have too much to do. I missed my house payment because of their inability to process my short term disability paperwork. I called over and over and was promised over and over that it would be done and faxed to the carrier, but no one seems to know how to do anything but one person, and her plate is full. I think the staff need major guidance but there is no one to train them. I am disappointed in their performance, but I will hold judgment till a later time after I see how things progress. I will post more about this situation later. I must say, though, if you want anything from them, you must be the squeakiest wheel around.

Excluding staff, I don't think you could find a better surgeon than Dr. Carter. A lovely person and fine surgeon.

I LIKED DR. CARTER RIGHT AWAY. HE IS VERY QUIET BUT DON'T THINK HE IS NOT LISTENING TO YOU. MY IMPRESSION IS EVEN BETTER HE IS SO KIND AND LETS YOU KNOW RIGHT AWAY THAT HE IS AVAILABLE 24 HOURS A DAY AFTER SURGERY.
THE ONLY PROBLEM I HAVE IS I AM GOING OUT OF TOWN TO HAVE MY SURGERY, ABOUT 1HR AND 45 MINS FROM HOME. DR. CARTER'S STAFF ARE WONDERFUL AND VERY HELPFUL.
I STARTED DOWN THE PATH OF SURGERY 2 YEARS AGO AND CHICKENED OUT BUT I NEEDED TO DO THE
SURGERY FOR EXCESSIVE REFLUX DISEASE ANYWAY,BOY WHAT A NUT I WAS THEN, I GUESS I WAS NOT READY. I STARTED AGAIN IN FALL OF 2002 AND I VISITED THE SAME SURGEON THAT WAS GOING TO OPERATE BEFORE. IT TOOK ABOUT5 MONTHS FOR MY INSURANCE TO GO THROUGH AND 1 WEEK BEFORE SURGERY I WAS TOLD MY SURGERY WAS CANCELLED. I LATER LEARNED THE HOSPITAL
HAD STOPPED ALL GASTRIC SURGERIES FOR NOW DUE TO LACK OF ADEQUATE MALPRACTICE INSURANCE. I FOUND OUT ABOUT DR. CARTER FROM SOMEONE ON THE INTERNET I MADE AN APPT
IN AUGUST, HE PUT ME ON A SPECIAL DIET OF ALL PROTEIN DRINK, WATER, CRYSTAL LIGHT AND
LIQUID BROTH. I HAVE LOST 41 LBS. AND I AM NOW GOIN TO SURGERY ON THE 16TH. THANKS TO DR. CARTER. I WOULD RATE HIM ON A SCALE OF 1-10 MAYBE 8 ONLY BECAUSE I DO NOT KNOW HIS BEDSIDE MANNER I AM SURE I WILL CHANGE MY MIND AND UP TO A 10.
