Carilion Memorial Hospital
My hospital stay was made as pleasant as possible by the hospital staff. I had an aide one day that was less than competent, but all the other staff members made up for that. I only have 2 real complaints. I had to wear the same soiled gown during my stay because they couldn't find any other large ones. Then when it came time for me to go home someone I'd never seen before came to get me with a wheelchair so small that I could barely get in it. She didn't attempt to help me, only said that she couldn't find a bigger one.
Carilion Roanoke Memorial is a teaching hospital so there were LOTS of folks in and out of my room. I didn't mind, because I'm a teacher myself, but I'd bet that some people who are feeling sick anyway would be annoyed with that many folks in and out. (hehe and I was worried about them being understaffed!)
I had a really sweet nursing student assigned to me for most of the week who did a good job. The nursing assistants were great and the nurses were good too, some I liked better than others.
The only seriously negative problem was parking. They are currently building an additional parking garage as the current one is PACKED! Fortunatley we only live about a mile from the hospital so my husband usually just walked. However, I have handicapped grandparents who had difficulty. And circling the parking lot for half an hour did not help my family keep on their "duty" schedule. They were usually frustrated or tired from walking so far by the time they got to my room. Luckily, this is a problem they are already in the process of working on.
There seemed to be some good nurses and bad ones. Some of them seemed to be bothered by requests especially if there was a problem. The night nurses were not quite as helpful. My big issue was with the Radiology Dept. When I went down for my leak test I was really weak and could hardly get out of the wheel chair by myself. They wouldn't even help you in fact one girl said that wasn't her job. They hoist you up on this moving ledge and I felt like I was gonna fall off. Be on the lookout or have a family member go with you. They better hope nobody gets hurt or they could have a law suit on their hands. That was the worst of the hospital stay.
