Rush Presbyterian St Luke Medical Center Hospital

This is a teaching hospital and the surgeons operating there are top notch and highly competent. I did not find the nursing or tech staff any better or less overworked than at other hospitals I've been in recently; there are some great ones and some not so great. It's a good thing I brought my own nightgown, however, or I would have been naked -- they didn't have a gown to fit me on the entire 9th floor and I guess no one was able to get one in the entire hospital (although they seemed to have plenty at surgery check-in). They sent me up from recovery in a bed full of blood from removing the arterial line and spoiled the gown I got before surgery. They tried to stuff me into a gown that was too small on my arms so it only came part way up; as soon as I was able to get to my bag I unpacked my own gown and was then able to get up and around with some semblance of modesty. Sometimes you may have to wait an hour or two for water or something else you may need, but I find this typical of all hospitals these days. The care on the 9th floor was much less attentive than the care on the 7th floor in the Atrium building -- almost like a different hospital!

Imagine your hooked up to a foley, IV, leg compressions and you have to go to the bathroom. But first you have to wait over an hour for someone to come unhook you from things. The amount of time that it took for people to check on you especially at night was frustrating. I found the one nurse's assistant sitting at the end of the hall reading a book and I hadn't seen her if like 5 hours. All I wanted was some fresh water, but hey, with the prices that we pay I expect to be attended to somewhat. I try not to be demanding but waiting hours for help is unforgiveable. I would be fired from my job if I left people waiting like that.
With that said though, I was looking for skill in surgeons and not niceness in nurses. But my toliet did not get cleaned for 3 days either which is unacceptable.

Very dirty room not kept clean and sanitized. Nurses are not helpful and rude. They let you know they do not want to be there and are overworked. One respiratory man forgot I was there and I had no oxygen for 1 hour before calling a nurse. I would never use this hospital again but in this case I had no choice. The other was much further away from my home.

I loved my surgeon but i did not love Rush. I think the nursing staff was too busy and I did not feel they were particularly sensitive to my needs- It took forever for someone to answer the call button and I could not get out of bed on my own. It was very distressing. Just a general attitude that i did not like. On the other hand, I came through with flying colors.

I have been a patient at Rush for a few years and have been hospitalized there several times. I have yet to have a negative experience with the physicians at Rush. Although I had one not so good experience, my overall review would be that Rush is an outstanding hospital and has some of the best physicians and support staff around.
