Rosie O’Donnell Revealed She Had Vertical Sleeve Gastroplasty

March 28, 2014

Comedian and activist, Rosie O'Donnell revealed she had Vertical Sleeve Gastroplasty in July 2013. During a recent event for the American Heart Association, O'Donnell told the audience "I did it to save my life".

O'Donnell suffered a major heart attack in 2012, which prompted her to make healthier lifestyle changes. She feared dying and leaving her children without a mother.

"It took a heart attack for me to learn to take care of myself" she told People Magazine.

She made recommended diet and exercise changes in an effort to lose weight and take control of her health. However, when she was not able to get her weight under 200 pounds as recommended by her doctor, she opted to have weight loss surgery.

So far she has lost 40 pounds, going from 230 pounds to 190 pounds. In addition to focusing on her own health, O'Donnell is spreading awareness about heart attack symptoms in women.

Fellow celebrity, Chef Graham Elliot, also underwent Vertical Sleeve Gastroplasty in July 2013.
