What's on your Monday Menu, RNYers?

I have to admit it is one of my guilty pleasure shows. I didn't care for the 600 Pound Life.

It is a reasonable representation of what it takes to get through the public system in NZ. They are so correct in saying South Auckland is junk food land! But every town has their fish&chippies, dairies (convenience stores), and takeaways.

One of the gals on the show is on our NZ chat group. She is lovely and a good cheerleader for others going through the process.

If you questions about NZ or the system we go through here, ask away!

The only thing I have been curious about is that it doesn't show much nutritional counseling at all, and it seems like a lot of these people are completely clueless about the basics.

And sometimes I will hear a throwaway line like "if he continues to eat baby-food, he'll be on the path to success" and I wonder if that is just the narrator not understanding, or if the nutritional guidance is vastly different than in the US?

Also, I basically teared up with all of the scenes when the woman was trying to identify basic vegetables (red cabbage!)... I am not finished with the season yet, so maybe she becomes successful... but I feel like that poor woman is never going to eat a veggie based diet, so I wish they taught her about low carb/keto because she would be a lot more successful long-term!

Yeah, they don't give a good view of the dietician part. We do get nutrition information and follow up for at least 2 years. I suspect it isn't shown because other folks attend that area of the hospital and they are not in for WLS and want their privacy.

Josephine is definitely a good representative for a population of folks that didn't receive adequate education as a youth for sure. (Long winded political reasons for this that aren't appropriate for a public forum) And like in the states, fresh foods can be more expensive than the takeaways. Her location is not rural and there aren't a lot of farm markets for cheap veggies.

Auckland is about the size of Boston and South Auckland is just a big sprawl of fast foods.

I am super fortunate that I am not going through the public system. It takes well over a year to go through the process. I know that the South Island only has 48 WLS available per year for the entirety of the SI. (Population 1.1m) There are maybe a couple hundred available for the North Island as they have the rest of our population about 3.2m. So you have to have a minimum bmi of 40 to qualify. They are trying to fund more surgeries as our population is expanding.

I saw that picture of the boxes Grim made. Really beautiful work - he is amazing!

QOTD: Interesting question... I think it would have to be chicken for me too for the same reason. Different marinades, chicken salad, chicken tacos, etc.

Good morning menu folks! I've been sleeping alot in my recliner and feel much better each day. Wth the power-lift chair, I am able to get in and out to go to the bathroom by myself. I am still very slow and have to be hunched over so I don't pull on the incision, but I can walk around the house, which is a nice feeling. I'm still waiting on a BM but taking my stool softener and hoping that it will come today.

I have 4 drains and they are draining about 10-40 ml per day.

Yesterday I had a friend who came over to visit and took me for a 5-6 block walk in m neighborhood. It as great to get out side and moving in the sunshine! I want to get out for one or two more today. We have a small house so laps around the house got old pretty fast!

I've been drinking lots of fluids includng SF popsicles, water, ice tea, PowerAde Zero and a little coffee. I've also been having 2 protein shakes a day and small portions of turkey, ham and eggs. I can't eat very much at one time before I feel really full, but I have a snack every 2-3 hours to keep getting in my protein and cushion my stomach for the pain meds. For breakfast this morning I had 3 oz of deli ham and an eggo waffle. I will have a protein shake with my second cup of coffee. Other than that it will be lots of protein snacks and shakes.

I have my first followup appointment with the surgeon this morning and I am hopeful that I will get out at least one of the drains. I also hope to see what things look like with the compression garments off. He did say that there wasn't any fat to lipo from my abs and breasts, just lots of skin. So we will see what the progress looks like!

Well folks, another slow and restful day on my agenda for me with a few short walks.

Stay healthy!

Janet

QOTD: I eat alot of chicken, but if I had to choose one, I think it would be salmon

So your surgeon is OK with you walking that much right after surgery? Seems like a lot. I know every surgeon is different, just asking.

At my appointment today he reminded me to slow down. I just get restless and bored and want to get out in the sunshine! I'll talk to him more at my appointment on Thursday.
