This interesting new twist offers an alternative to GLP-1s and acts as a temporary lining on the small intestine to mimic a gastric bypass for 24 hours.

Topic: RE: Diarrhea at least five times a day, what can I take to stop it?!?

After my surgery, the Dr. told me an egg a day keeps the diarrhea away. It seemed to work for me. I still get diarrhea at least a few times a month but only as part of normal bowel movements ... meaning no accidents.

Most people here had the BPD DS you mentioned. It's also referred to as the Hess DS and started in the 1980's. A smaller number here like myself had newer versions like the SADi DS (also called Single Loop DS) which is a simpler version but similar in many respects. There are also people here with other weight loss procedures (RNY, VSG) that help with advice or share their experiences.

Topic: RE: Super dizzy

It's not uncommon for people who lost a lot of weight, especially DS or Sadi DS. I had the same thing around 18 months out from the surgery. It lasted 6 to 12 months and mostly occurred after I was sitting or laying down and then got up and started moving around. The doctor said to take a moment when I initially stand, consume a lot more water, and intake more salt.

I'm 10+ years post Sadi (Loop) DS and no dizziness issues in many years.

Congratulations Jo and thanks for sharing your story. I can feel how real the experience is, and assure you much of it has been shared by the others on this site.

I'm 10 years next month and have the same issue. It's based on what u eat. generally diary, carbonated drinks, anything with sorbitol, onions and others. The products like Devrom don't do anything for me.

Topic: RE: DS to RNY revision?

I've noticed it's common for people to go to mediocre doctors nearby and then be willing to travel the world to fix problems later. Your doctors recommendation seems dubious. I would get another opinion and seek out an expert, even if you have to travel to find one.

Best of luck!

Topic: RE: High PTH low/normal calcium very low Vit D help

You can't take too much calcium, the body won't normally absorb much more than the 1200mg you are taking. Many of us take the same. When I took less the blood work always looked normal because your bones will make up for any shortfalls, and the become brittle over time. I had to have a urine analysis over 24 hours to see that I had a calcium deficit that did not show in my bloodwork. At the time I was taking 600mg per day, now up to 1200 like you. No issues any more.

It will balance out over time. I was 135lbs as a 6'1 male, who previously weighed almost 300lbs. Eventually, after your body has time to adjust to the missing gall bladder and some new routines, you will level off.

Nutritionists are a complete waste of time for wls. They have no meaningful experience but offer loads of advice anyway. You will know far more than any nutritionist and many doctors based on your first-hand experience over the next year or two. Doctors who don't specialize in wls surgery (e.g your PCP) also know very little about your specific needs.

100% Agreed. I could eat almost anything during year 1 except white meat Turkey or Chicken. It was the only food that would come back up. I had a much easier time with steak than white meat.

Topic: RE: Osteoporosis treatments after DS

I was never big on weight training either. I started by walking a block or so, then jog a 100 feet, then walking a little more. I then started lifting with 3-pound weights in each hand. It took 4 years to get to a simple basic workout mostly because I focus more on consistency but not weight amounts. After about 6 years I started a little more advanced workout but nothing special. My goal is to get in simple steps each day plus 20 min of arm and shoulder exercises plus the gut. Everything is pretty basic and can be done at home. I go to the gym just for a change of scene.

Topic: RE: Osteoporosis treatments after DS

I also have Osteopenia (62 yrs old male, SADi DS in 2014) which I think is very common in both WLS patients and in many people as they get older. I could eat a horse every day and not gain weight, but I also can't add much muscle and worry about osteoporosis and certain cancers I think WLS patients are more vulnerable to.

If you haven't already had a bone scan, you should do it every 2 years at a min. It shows progression very clearly, which for me is primarily is my wrists.

A couple of points to combat it:

1) I doubled my calcium (600 units x 2 times daily), 2) Dr said it's the vit D that needs upgrading with Osteopenia, so I now take 10k units x 2 each day (20k units total). 3) I get a lot of exercise for an old guy, and resistance training is really important for everyone as they age. You should focus on weight lifting while standing (e.g. curls, presses, pushups). The load-bearing component is how you help keep bones strong.

This is an important topic impacting many wls patients, so pls keep us updated and good luck!

Topic: RE: Ongoing Story, Post-SADI Patient

First of all, congrats on losing 142 pounds. It's a great accomplishment. Sorry to hear you are in pain. As you know, I also had the Sadi in 2014 and also have a 300cm common channel. I continue to take Omeprozol (also took pre-wls) for silent acid reflux but have not had the issues you are experiencing. I think it may just be a coincidence especially since your surgery was 9 or 10 months ago.

I might consider having a different highly experienced bariatric surgeon review your issues with a GI specialist to confirm the source of the issue, if possible.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery!

Topic: RE: New DS Patient

Congrats on the surgery. I'm male, 62 yrs old, had the SADi in 2014 (300cm cc). I have mostly similar experiences to HESS DS patients except for carbs. It seems that everyone has a unique experience, and you'll only be able to answer your questions based on trial and error over several years.

My experience and those I've read here don't generally include spasms post-surgery. It doesn't seem like a big deal but your dr should offer some insight. Regarding protein, fat, and vitamins you should generally follow guidelines for the first few months and then go by your own experience and adjust annually based on lab results and also monitor based on what you see on the scale. Many people cling to their Dr. and Nutritionist after surgery but in reality, they become irrelevant very quickly. You're better off finding a good support group and finding a PCP that understands annual lab results.

My suggestions based solely on my own experience: 1) Eat heavy protein, 2) Fat Full Everything 3) Eat unlimited loads of fruits and Veggies.

I eat 20 to 30 lbs of fruit every week, 100 to 150 grams of protein daily, ice cream and avocadoes for fat, and every morning starts with a banana, chobanni strawberry greek yogurt, and oatmeal. I eat a lot of carbs (chocolate) but I get daily exercise now that I can. I also weigh myself daily, track steps on my iPhone and occasionally track what I eat to confirm nutritional content. My weight has been very stable over the past 5 years, and I'm very aware when things change even a little.

Topic: RE: Lost another 10 pounds. Now underweight.

Your body will gravitate to the right place but it may take time. I was very underweight for 2 to 3 years before I finally stabilized. And this was after being morbidly obese.

Fortunately, our bodies are amazing in their ability to adapt.

Topic: RE: Post Surgery Gallbladder Removal

I think Gallbladder issues go hand in hand with the DS procedure including the Sadi. So much so, my WLS surgeon told me he was going to just remove it as a precaution at the same time he performed my Sadi procedure in 2014.

Turns out he did not remove it, although I have not had any Gallbladder issues to date. I'm a believer in eating good fats anytime you like, as well as high amounts of protein, and any amount of fruits and fiber you like. It works well for me so far but everyone needs to evaluate what works for them.

Topic: RE: Labs after DS

Is pretty much annual and you'll find a need to make modest adjustments almost every time. Early on for me, it was more Calcium Citrate, less Iron. Then more Zinc and Vitamin K. Then more D; wow it's even more K but everything else is ok.

You need a comprehensive blood panel every time and not every lab is capable to do all the tests, so verify in advance.

Hi Mike, congrats on the wls. The one thing I disagree with you on is the comment about not being able to be as active at 58. I had wls 8 years ago at 54, and now at 62, I'm more active than ever. Let me know when you're up for the Ironman and maybe I'll join you, or at last the first half of it. :)

It's not just the ladies, I eat a ton of sugar everyday. It's my single biggest failure since having wls. I gained back 25 lbs after 2 years but nothing since. The wls is still very effective at keeping me thin, and I do a lot of exercising to help things along.

It should be possible but the actual number doesn't really matter. You should target feeling good about yourself and being healthy. That is almost guaranteed with a combination of wls your personal commitment.
