To all those that say the info in my post..."About the Duodenal Switch or BPD-DS" is wrong.
I totally with Cindy's post. If you insist on specializing on something, then choose what you have personally experienced. I have given info on the DS to people sometimes, but ALWAYS saying that they would be getting more info from people who have had that surgery. The point here, is this is the ONTARIO board. It's about people from Ontario getting info, meeting people, getting support. So if someone is so determines to get DS info out there, put it on the DS board. Or is it a matter or regretting your choice for having RNY and not wanting other people to have it. Kind of "if I can't have it, you can't either!!".
I would like to say that I'm not going to come on this board, but I have made some awesome friends here, so I will keep on coming!
I deplore that fact that OH posts this info. I would recommend that everyone who knows FOR A FACT that the info they post here about the DS (the one from Sinai), should contact OH and explain that this info is not at all based on accurate info. Just keep doing it! That's all you can do, I think.
I'm getting my RNY in less than a week. And this info is very much the reason why I didn't go DS. I've made my peace with my choice, but I still think that if the info had been less "dramatic" I might have considered the DS further.
Good night!
I find this very interesting, and something I did not even notice. Ed, you are constantly posting info, old articles, jokes and general crap to stir the pot and get everyone wound up. You say you do this to help the newbs, and spread the word, but the fact is, you've rarely, if ever given us any insight into your personal experience with your surgery of choice. The most important thing we can do as post ops is share OUR personal experiences, the good and the bad, yet you choose not to. Now I'll be the first to admit I've been lax on Mel updates as of late, but she's a year out, working full time and raising a family. However, if you go back and look at our first six months of post-op living, you will find we were posting almost daily, with ACTUAL life experiences, not rehashing some 5th hand junk we had already posted 12 times previously. You want to help? Let everyone know how YOU are doing.
Very good point!
Karen

Ed:
I believe you have posted accurate and impartial information. Don't let the hate mongers get you down. All one has to do is ask oneself why less than five percent of U.S. surgeons endorse the DS. All one has to do is ask why several well known DS surgeons have abandoned the procedure. The irony is when you look at the RNYers posts, they are generally informative and encouraging with a bit of humility. Those of SOME of the DSers are hateful, biased, and baseless. Finally, the DS has its rightful place in the bariatric world, generally for those with BMI greater than 50, or who have failed a RNY. DS surgeons are very skilled but few can perform the procedure laparoscopically, defeating one of the major advantages of laparoscopic surgery. DSers require more revisions and have more leaks. DS has the most weight loss of any procedure and has the benefit of allowing one to eat large quantities. The side effects of the DS you listed are accurate. Of course we know, even if some DSers don't, that you did not imply everyone gets these symptoms, just that they are frequent. Keep posting Ed, the silent majority agree with you.
