Post-op bleeding?
RNY on 01/06/12
Hey, sorry to bug you guys again, but today before I left the hospital the nurse changed a couple of bandages. The one above my bellybutton looked like it has bled since, it's dark red/brown colour. Any of you experience this? I remember them telling me to watch for puss, fever and more than usual pain, but I don't remember anthing about bleeding.
Any tips would be appreciated!

Hi, I had a haematoma (SP?) in that spot, and bled for a bit so they arranged for a home nurse to come and change the bandages. It was worse after the drive home. The nurse came for about 4 days, checked for fever etc,and all was well, but if you are concerned please call your clinic in the am.
Best Wishes

Hi April,
Check your discharge papers - page 2:
SIGNS TO WATCH FOR - PLEASE NOTIFY YOUR PHYSICIAN IF:
2nd bullet: You have excessive pain or new pain, swelling, bleeding, discoloration or drainage from the wound.
Also above this:
Wound Care:
If you have a dressing, always keep your dressing clean and dry. I fthe dressing becomes soiled or wet, it must be changed in order to prevent infection.
If you are concerned call the WMC tomorrow morning or if you are really worried, go to the Emergency at the Civic.
Keep us posted.
Judy

I had bleeding there post-op for about 10 days and a HUGE bruise. I called the clinic, went to see them, had the dressing changed and found out how to do it myself, and monitored my temperature 2x's / day for about 7 days. It cleared up on it's own. The pressure on the pillow I had between me and the seat belt seemed to bring it on.
I would follow up with your clinic tomorrow, and in the interim try to keep it dry (I used a gauze pad held on with white medical tape) and keep track of your temperature. I think this is quite common, but you need to keep on top of it.
As a side note, the nurse told me that having the blood come out (assuming it's not a lot) is good, because it helps prevent infection inside.
Unless you are bleeding a lot, don't worry unduely - just follow up as soon as you can.
All the best
Claire

April,
As the posts above have said, if you are concerned, you should check with the Centre. Think about the fact, however, that you had surgery two or three days ago that involved making incisions that go all the way through your abdominal wall. Even if I had cut my finger in the kitchen, I would expect it to bleed more than one bandage change. My bandage that I wore home from the hospital had some minor bleeding and I would have been surprised if it hadn't, especially as the ride home involved some movements, clothing etc. that were not there in the hospital.
Would you say it is seeping blood, or did the bandage soak through quickly? If the bandage dries, then I would tend to believe that it had stopped bleeding, especially if it is dark red or brown coloured, as opposed to bright red and wet. It may very well be that the reason they didn't mention bleeding was because they were listing things you should be worried about.
All the best for an uneventful recovery!
