how soon can i shower?
Funny how this varies from hospital to hospital and surgeon to surgeon. After my RNY I showered in the hospital the next day.
I was told to let the Steri strips fall off on their own.
I have a friend who had a full lower body lift (so incision all the way around) her plastic surgeon told her she had to have a warm, soapy shower every day.

I showered day 3 at the hospital the morning I left in a solo effort. One of my bandages had come off and the streristrip came off with it prior to the shower. The nurse said it healed up very nice already and that showering would be fine but to be carefull with direct spray. During the shower I took the rest off and the nurse said later they looked good too and no bandages or steristrips required.

Hey Toni, in Ottawa I showered the next morning on my own.I was told not to douse the incisions, just let the water flow over them. They changed the dressings before I left the hospital and then told me to just let them fall off on their own and if they had not came off within 7 days to remove them.
Having said all that, obviously by all of the replies each centre is different so I would speak to your centre to see what their guidelines are.

Thanks for all of your replies! It's amazing how different everyone's experiences can be! I'm happy to report that I showered this morning and it was amazing! I think I am ready to make the 5.5hr car ride home!

Surgery JAN. 19th, 2012 - Down 120 lbs & 75 inches @ my last Weigh in!!!!
I would not recommending peeling the tape off. Everyone heals at a different rate and you don't know what is going under there. I would recommend trimming back the pieces of tape that will curl up. The tape will fall off on its own. I had a very brief shower before I left the hospital. If you have a handheld showerhead that would be ideal. Dont spray directly on the incisions or put soap right on them. Just le****er run over them and make sure the incisions are dry (pat them dry first). Wet bandages = not a good idea!
Toni, so happy for you again - I hope you are doing spectacularly well my friend!!
