Question about Sugar

I know if you eat sugar, you will experience dumping, but does your body know the difference in natural sugar (fruit) and refined sugar?  I'm just wondering if fruit will cause dumping like sweets will.

Some do and some don't.  Not everyone with a RNY dumps, only about 30%.  Some just dump on sugar, others on fats and high carbs.  Lucky me, I dump not only with sugar but too much fruit and even too much sugar alcohols.  I have to watch the total sugar grams in everything.

I've heard a lot of Rnyers talk about dumping and it sounds really individual - if you dump or don't and if you do, on what.

once upon a time I had a group to talk about Binge Eating Disorder, and later one about Clean Eating.

PM me if you are interested in either of these.

It can also vary from one day to the next.   I have a few "certs" like ice cream but I can be ok with something one day and wanting to die from the same thing the next ...

It is so individual who dumps on what and how much or whether they dump at all. And sometimes there's no predicting- something tolerated one day will cause dumping the next. Me, I dump on ice cream. And me, I don't try anything that might possibly cause dumping away from home. Except ice cream.

There is no answer that is 100% true for all post ops.  Refined sugars may tend to cause issues with more post ops, but there are post ops *****act to fructose, expecially if it's more than "just a little".  Sugars are high in fructose--eat a few and you're likely ok. Eat a big bunch and you're more likely to have issues.  I know a couple of women in my support groups *****act to the 3g or so of sugars in Propel water.  Be careful about large quantities of citrus fruits, which have fructose. Their high acidic level is sometimes problematic in the healing process to new post ops.  BUT, there was a recent issue with one 14 mo. post op in my support group. He said he consumed a LOT of oranges and other citrus fruits this past summer. Last month he felt a pain in his abdomen, but it went away in a day and he thought it was just indigestion.  A couple of weeks later he had a tar like constency and dark color to his stool. He called his PCP and was told to go to the ER. He got scoped, and he had bleeding ulcers. He spent 2 days in the hospital on IV's and returned home after 2 days in the hospital. He now takes 2 Nexium daily and has to be rescoped in a month.  He never smoked or drank alcohol either.  Things sometimes just happen.  Only issue our support group or his PCP can think of is that the high consumption of citrus fruits help to erode part of bleeding ulcer area.  So, things happen--just be aware of that.  DAVE

About 30% of RNY folks will experience dumping if they eat sugar.  Most do not.

I'm not sure how your body knows the difference between different types of sugar.  Some RNY folks do dump on fruit.  Some don't.  I dumped on fruit once when I ate a whole lot of it first thing in the morning with nothing else in my pouch.  Normally, though, I do not dump on fruit.  I do dump on table sugar (sucrose), if I eat too much of it.

The hospital program I went through in Toronto gave us numbers, that they called the most recent, that said 50% will dump at least once - where do you guys get the 30% figure?

LOL Steve!

I had heard/read 40% dump somewhere.   Whatever the stat, like others have said.  Some will dump, some won't.  I have experienced it more with fatty foods.  Also if I eat to much fruit.  I still avoid high sugar foods the best I can.  There have also been some foods that have caused me to dump one time and then not the next.   I use a sugar called Whey Low.  It is all natural made of sucrose, chrystaline lactose and chrystaline fructose.  It is 1/4 the calories of table sugar, has a lower glycemic index, measures 1 for 1 as regular sugar in recipes (including baking) and has NO aftertaste which is the important factor for me.  When I feel like having a bite of ice cream, I make it using this sugar which they make in a fine grain made for ice cream.
