non-NSAID anti-inflammatory

Cymbalta is not an anti-inflammatory, though.  It's an antidepressant which is also sometimes used to treat chronic pain.  It helps  a lot of people with pain but it won't do diddly for inflammation.

Everyone seems to have the same thing to say regarding NSAID's. I was told at WLS orientation that post-op RNY's would never be able to take NSAID's again because of the increased risk of ulcers. Unfortunately I believe steroids have a similar increased risk of development of ulcers as I have been told to avoid those also by my surgeon. Ultram is a good alternative if it doesn't make you sleepy.

Hope the information is helpful and that you are able to find some relief.

Ultram will help with pain but won't do anything for inflammation.

Most surgeons say steroids are safe for RNY patients.  Ultran isn't a good alternative to steroids because it is not an anti-inflammatory.  It helps with pain but won't help with inflammation.

Thanks!  I do feel significantly better now and I was able to see my Orthopedist yesterday.  He gave me a steroid shot in the muscle and a prescription for physical therapy that I hope to be able to start next week.  I'm actually pretty happy to be starting PT, since I know anything I can do to strengthen my core prior to surgery will help with my healing.  So it worked out pretty well!
