Marathoners?

I am 10 days post op and dropping weight nicely (23 pounds so far).  I have completed 4 full marathons since Sept of 2007.  Those were at 240-260 pounds.  Painful, barely able to run, and nearly crippled after each one.  I am looking forward to marathoning again later this year as a much lighter man.  Who can tell me about the hydration challenges and carb challenges after gastric bypass?  My ultimate goal will be an Ironman title before I turn 56 years old.

That's awesome bro! Congrats on your surgery, but most importantly taking back your life. I have no hydration or carb problems at all. I usually use Cliff Shot Lemonade for my drink (Sweetened with evaporated cane juice not high fructose crap), and do Sports Beans, Cliff Bars and Power Bar Gels. Best of luck on your goals, and stick around and post regularly, there are a lot of inspirational folks around these parts....

Scott, thank you for the reply also.  I see you are still running at the size I am trying to get down from.  God Bless you.  It beats the mind and body like a fight everytime you go out and pound the pavement at those weights.  I am hoping to run at less than 200 pounds by the end of the year.  The end weight goal is 170 pounds.  I am 5' 10" tall so I shoud be in a lot better running condition that at 250.  Keep running.

What type of surgery did you have?  The hydration will get much easier as you get farther out.  I can pretty much gulp 10-12 oz at a time now.  I have just discovered that eggs were causing me GI distress for the past two years so I actually have to figure out all over what I can take in.  Good luck with your goals.
Scott

Some have no GI distress, and some have a lot of it.  Nearly 6 years post-op I still have major trouble during long races (half and full marathons), but I still do them anyway.

Good luck on this new stage of your life!
