Sad but true

Ok, ok I'm lame. I took everyone's advice a while back and looked into the Couch 2 5K plan. It sounded like a good idea, in theory it should work.....not for me. I can't even run the first part of the first day. It feels weird and akward, aside from the fact that shows that I am way out of shape and I feel like I can't breathe. Do you do push through it? HELP! I want to be a runner!

Try to improve everyday... One day speed, one day distance. One day jog around the block, next day try to do it faster, next day do it twice, next do it faster, so forth and so on... What do you do to push through? PUSH THROUGH...

Don't give up!  I used C25K to train for my first 5K, which I ran on Sunday.  My plan is to run one 5K a month through the fall, trying to improve my time (which was a slow 37:09).  C25K is an 8 week program (I think, I don't really remember) but I did it over the course of months!  When I first started, I did the intervals with walking and walking faster, because I just wasn't ready to run.  I did it for like three weeks before I felt comfortable running!  I had tried it once before and pushed myself too hard-- and I totally failed, which made me give up.  This time, I took it at my own pace and it really made all the difference.  I still enjoy intervals and often do a pattern of 5 minutes running, two minutes walking, eight minutes running, two minutes walking, five minutes running, and so on.

Good luck, and don't give up!  Running is a great workout.

I'm doing the C25K program as well. I totally lazed out the last two weeks and going back this week. In fact restarting tonight.

My first day I thought my lungs would burst! I even stared at my timer I use to make sure I time PRECISELY how long I have to jog and walk for. hehe It DOES get easier! Even if you have to keep redoing weeks. I'm still on week 2 since I couldn't jog for the whole minute and a half. Just like Dan and meg said you just suck it up and PUSH THROUGH!! hehe Even if sucking air is all you are able to do. hehe

Keep posting here and everyone will cheer you on. They are SOO fab!! I am soo glad I found this forum! They are just such great and wonderful people and so positive and supportive!! I LOVE that there is NO drama on this forum too!! hehe

Look forward to seeing you post your progress Alli!! Keep working it sweety!!
*big hugs*

Alli -

I felt the same way last October. AND NOW I AM A RUNNER!!  You can do it! You have to focus and tell yourself you are going to push through it, and you will push through it. Your body will not let you down. Your legs are used to carrying quite a load, and now they have much less of you to carry! They are strong, you are just going to be training them!

Every morning in Africa, a gazelle wakes up.
It knows it must outrun the fastest lion or it will be killed.
Every morning in
Africa, a lion wakes up.
It knows that it must run faster than the slowest gazelle, or it will starve.
It doesn't matter whether you're a lion or a gazelle
when the sun comes up you'd better be running.

First of all don't hurt yourself physically or beat yourself up mentally because you are having a hard time with it.  Start over, adjust the time, do 1/2 the time it says you should.  If it say run 30 second then only run 15, stretch it out and build up a base of fitness.  Giving up is not the way to succeed at this.

I recently found a couple quotes, one from Greg lemond and one  from a book about the Ultra Marathon Man.

I'll paraphrase what Lemond had to say.  Cycling never gets easier, because we are always pushing ourselves to get better.  So while our ability may improve, and we may go faster and further, the actual riding never gets any easier, because we can always do more and try harder.

The other quote that really hit home with me was as follows:

" Well," I answered slowly, "going out hard was the right thing to do. It felt pretty good." Coach kicked some dirt around with his foot. "If it felt good," he said, squinting like Cling Eastwood, "you didn't push hard enough. It's supposed to hurt like hell."

Scott, I just read that book last week and loved it.  I really liked the quote too.

if it were easy, everyone would do it.

Everyone else's advice is awesome.  break it down into little pieces - run 10 seconds at a time if you need to.  Anything worth doing takes work, so just keep trying.

I look forward to reading about your progress!

Oh, and get yourself some good running sneakers if you haven't already!  They REALLY help!
