After a big hike last night, I dragged myself to the track and got in a 3 mile run today. Slow and steady....13 minute miles. I would really like to work on increasing my speed.

6.02 mile run this morning. I had to yell at myself to slow down the first 2 miles,so I was bored the first 2-3 miles, but was grateful by the time I got to about the 4.5 point because I had it in me to finish strong.

3.1 miles in 40:56.  Moved inside to treadmill due to heat and humidity.  Time is sucky, but at least I finally got the distance back up.

I did 3 at lunch at a similar pace. VF, I found doing some HIITS (High Intensity Interval Training) at the track once or twice a week helped my speed and recovery with my walk jog intervals on distance runs.  I go to the track and try to run  the straight (100 yards) then walk the curves and jog the back straight.  In the beginning I start with at least 4 laps, currently dong 8 laps, need to work back to 16 laps.  As I get better, the 100yds need to turn into 220s then 440s then 880s but thats down the road for me right now.  The sprinting seems to help teach the body it can go faster and the frequent short recoveries seem to aid the body in recovery time during distance runs and espcially recovery from hills (for me).  So thats how I got from 15 min miles to my fastest was 9:30 miles 2 yrs ago,..and how I hope to get back ther from my 13 min mile current pace as I work to increase my distance and speed.  It just takes time, patience, and perseverance.  Too much too fast results in injury and setback.

Thanks for the pointers! I think I will try the intervals on my off-days (usually Tuesdays and Thursdays). Last May, I attempted my first 5k and could only run the first mile of it. Had to walk the rest, so my time was 44 minutes. My next 5k is at the end of August and I would be thrilled to do it in 36 minutes, but it will be in the heat of day. So, I think I need to add some variety to my training. Thanks again!

After I dropped my son off at a boot camp fitness program, I went for a 3 mile run.

Ran in a cotton shirt and boy was it hot. It really does trap the heat. Been a while since I wore anything but a tech shirt.
