How are things??? Are you staying the course?

Just thinking of you and hoping that you're staying encouraged as you work towards your surgery date and the rest of your WLS journey.

Warm wishes,

Marie.

Hmm I am a 2nd year university student and also just too tired (okay fine too lazy) to cook so here are some things I do at 2 years post op:

Breakfast-1 scrambled egg and a piece of cheese. Really delicious and fills me up for a few hours. also super quick in the morning!

Lunch and dinner I like to do mostly lean dense protein so basically meat. I buy the frozen pre-cooked chicken or shrimp or meatballs so all I need to do is microwave them and throw them in a container to go to school or when I get home I can just microwave them and eat them. Can also add a sprinkle of shredded cheese on top and melt it which tastes great

Snacks:my favourite because there are so many options that I can throw into my bag! almonds, pure protein or quest bars, fruit, fat free greek yogurt, sugar free pudding, or I will do my own "protein pack" things with 2 lean turkey pepperoni sticks and a babybel lite cheese. veggies and hummus are also a great option as well as just a piece of cheese.

Good luck!

Topic: Pad Thai- bean sprouts instead of noodles?

My absolute favourite food before surgery has always been pad thai from Thai Express. After surgery, I have stopped eating bread/rice/pasta especially rice and pasta because they are just too filling and heavy on my pouch so i dont tolerate them that well even at a little over 2 years out. I still like to go there with my friends though even if I was a little reluctant at first because I have always hated eating out after surgery. But I have been replacing my noodles with bean sprouts so it would cut down the carbs. Does anyone else do that? I personally like it a lot because I am still getting to eat my favourite food and 1 container is always around 3 meals for me so I always eat it over the course of 2-3 days.

how about Sugar alcohols (SA).. They can cause a different reaction that splenda or aspartame.

what about Stevia? I tolerate taht quite well... and there are a lot of shakes (powder, not RTD) that are sweetened with Stevia...(i.e. About Time Whey; Jay Rob,  and many others.)

The SA - the one taht causes the least problem for most people is Erythritol - you may try that... (I do not tolerate any SA)

I don't like splenda or aspartame but my body tolerates saccharine quite well...

there are solutions - you need to find out what works best for you.

There are a lot of people who did not drink any protein shakes..  I did.. and I probably did too much and i developed dairy allergy..

But when I had problem getting enough proteins and i needed more in easy form..I found taht egg white protein or vegan (with no soy) protein shakes that were also organic and sweetened with Stevia (i.e. Orgain brand, or Vega, Jay Rob, etc)

Also - finding an unflavored protein - then adding that to things like chicken stock, or other soup base can be a solution for more savory shakes..

I recommend utilizing a crockpot if you have one, if not, definitely a life-saving investment, especially if you don't feel like cooking when you get home. I like to make salsa chicken, just throw some chicken in the crock pot with a jar of salsa and set it on low for 6-8 hours then shred it when it's done, throw some sour cream on it and yummm.

Steamed broccoli and shrimp with a little low sodium soy sauce on top if you're craving Chinese.

The weigh****chers parmesan baked chicken recipe is actually super yummy!

For snacks, I really like to boil a couple eggs and then mix the yolk with a little fat-free mayo for a knock off deviled egg and sliced banana with some cinnamon sprinkled on top.

If I think of more, I'll let you know!

Topic: Artificial Sweetener problems

Hello!  I'm getting started on my 4th attempt at surgery.  I have been reading the forums and looking for articles about artificial sweeteners.  I know I'm not going to be able to have sugar (which I am working on accepting) but I can not have artificial sweeteners either.  They give be brain splitting migraines.  I know..you are thinking "Have you tried Splenda? because Splenda is great stuff!" and I tell ya...next time I can schedule a possible 2 day migraine I'll try it out...but I really don't want to risk it...just not worth it...

So many post op stories talk about protein shakes and I don't know if I can have them.  I looked at the Premier Shake site and they don't list ingredients.  I basicly have to stay away with anything that ends in "OSE" because that means artificial sweetener.  If I have to I can puree some grilled chicken breasts or something but I am hoping it won't come to that!    This is on my list of questions for the nutritionist when I have my first official appointment with the Bariatric Center but I was kinda hoping to hear it from someone who has maybe been thru it.

Thanks for any help you can give!

I've been really bad lately and fell off the wagon. Trying to get back on. I'm needing some ideas of meals and snacks. I work long days. Monday-Saturday and live alone so it's hard for me to find motivation to cook after work and just for myself.

You can either use it raw or baked.

For dessert, you can mix it with some dark grated chocolate.  Traditionally, you'd put some sugar in it, almond or lemon extract (or rosewater if Sicilian) and just mix/chill.  Add berries.  You can also make a baked sweet zabaglione like dessert, but I don't see it commonly here in the Midwest.  Basically, you can eat it just like cottage cheese.

I heat it up and put a ragu (italian meat sauce) on it instead of polenta - yep, just ricotta!

I also bake it.  You can use  this recipe from Eggface, for example.  I dice and add pepperoni or ham, too.  It is a nice alternative.

I follow a ketogenic diet post-op. I also have a diagnosis of binge eating disorder. Feel free to ask me about either!
