I woke up on 8/12/16 with a sore foot at the base of my second toe but it wasn't too bad and I could walk on it without too much discomfort, it just felt like I had bruised it somehow.
Fast forward 3 sleepless days/nights of elevating it, icing it, taking Aleve and Tylenol. Foot so swollen now up to the ankle that I can't wear a shoe on it, can't hardly stand to touch it much less trying to walk on it. Foot has changed color to a deep reddish purple and feels hot on the inside though the skin feels normal temperature and there are pulses present and strong (so unlikely a blood clot).
After 3 days of pretty significant pain, I gave up trying to diagnose and treat myself and went to my local ER last night. (I am a retired RN with past experience in Med/Surg and ER.) I didn't want to be "one of those patients" who run to ER every time they get a hangnail and scream for narcotic pain meds because their pain level is a "10". By the time I hobbled around getting a shower, getting dressed and walking what seemed like 5 miles from the ER parking lot to the ER, I was struggling to hold back the tears that wanted to spill forth. Even at this level of pain, I rated my pain level "8". This was not a "10" level pain that causes you to be inconsolable and undistractable and writhing around unable to be still and quiet and unable to focus on anything except the pain. After discussing my discharge instructions to follow a "gout diet", most of the items it says I am to avoid are the very things that I should be eating to follow the low-carb, high protein diet I started on when I began this journey. (I don't have a surgery date and have been denied by the Bariatric Center after my psych evaluation).
Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this and what dietary changes you were able to make and still stay on your diet plan.
Hello! I'm 3 weeks post op and was the same way as you. I do however take about an hour to drink my protein shake, it's the premier protein sold at Sam's and Costco. Everyday it will get better and better to drink your liquids a little faster
Hello friends. I'm 3 wks out today. Over the weekend I tried several foods and did very well but don't wanna get tired of eating same thing over and over. Any recommendations besides: egg, mashed potatoes, tuna, yogurt? I trying really hard to drink as much protein as I can, haven't lost any more weight since last week. 13lbs since surgery 3 wks ago.
There is absolutely no reason you have to drink it that quickly. Take as long as you need.

Hi all,
First timer here. I had surgery 2 days ago 8/10/16 and Im basically only drinking water. In hospital I had a few sips here and there. Well just got home today and the protein that I have is Body Fortress Whey Protein from Walmart - Choc/Peanut Butter. This is the protein I used post op as well and I like the taste even after surgery but the container says it has to be drank in 10 minutes - there is no way. Its something I like to sip on here and there because Im still filled with gas. Anyone have experience with this protein and did you really drink it and gulp it down in 10 minutes?
So Happy I found a group were I have something in common.
Hello, has anyone tried these drink mixes? I bought this box from Costco and it looks like all the good stuff in a multivitamin. I'm 2 wks post op and afraid to take regular vitamin pills, they are too big for me, make me gag.
Thanks for the help. Shortly after posting that I definitely had some dumping. At least now I know what that's like and what to watch out for (not fun!!). I guess breaking old habits is hard but I'm trying!
Hi,
I had VSG not RNY, so I can only speak from my experience. Yes, way to fast on both accords. In my surgery, nerve endings were cut, everything is still swollen and sore. It takes longer at this point to feel the fullness. Take your time. I used a baby spoon to eat the pureed stuff. It should take at least 1/2 hour to eat 2-3 ounces of pureed. I would take a bite every minute and put the spoon down in between. This also helps you retrain yourself how to eat and take your time. At two weeks out, the only protein I was eating was from yogurt or powder. I was not allowed to have chicken et al. until at least 4 weeks. Even at that point the most I could eat was 2 ounces every few hours.
If you aren't feeling the fullness until 10-15 minutes after, you are drinking way too fast. Keep in mind you never want to feel "full", you want to feel "satisfied". Slow and stead gets you to satisfied better than gulping down and then feeling full later.
When in doubt, always circle back to your post-op documents and your nutritionists guidelines.
Hope this helps and good luck on your journey!
First time poster here. I've been reading around the forum and I'm really excited to be a part of it! So much wonderful information to read, it will keep me busy for hours!
Now on to my question. I'm on week two of post-op, puréed foods, protein shakes, etc. I'm able to drink a protein shake that I'm making myself in about ten minutes no issues. It contains a scoop of powder (130 cals, 20g protein), a cup of milk, and a cup of ice. I throw it in the nutribullet, sit down with my shake/frosty and enjoy! Is this too much too fast? I usually don't have any signs of fullness with it until maybe 10-15mins after. I just want to make sure I'm not taking on too much too fast.
I also do not get any fullness when eating my 1.5oz of protein and 1oz of fruit/veggie in about 5-10mins. I'm concerned that I'm not getting the typical "signs" of having a smaller stomach.
