Impacted Bowel! Help!
I too had severe constipation, but never got to the impacted bowel stage, thank God.
Everyone else's advise is very good, so I won't add to that - BUT -
TAKE THIS VERY SERIOUSLY.
This could become life-threatening, and I am not joking at all.
Tomorrow morning, be at her office, ready to go to hospital (with your supplies) and ready for anything from manual removal of the stool to actual surgery.
Neither are fun - but they will help.
The one thing nobody has mentioned is the effect our surgery has on your large intestine. You would htink that it doesn't affect the lower portion of the bowel, because they "snipped" up by the duodenum/jejunum - but it does.
The best of luck to you.
Hope the Fleet enema works - it'll be unpleasant (and smelly), but worth it, if it does.

fleet is not likely to work...lots of water and you need a 5H enema(wat we called it back in me nursing days) High, Hot, Hell of a lot, Hold it till you Hiccup....most likely u will require disimpaction, the fact you already have a fissure is bad....they shouyld have helped you at the docs or ER....good luck...

LACTULOSE...LACTULOSE...LACTULOSE! (with a side of lax-a day)
it is an over the counter stool softener. You have to ask the pharmacist as they keep it behind the counter $12. take it daily and the lax-a day until you go. I take the combo if I notice I haven't gone in a while. I was impacted 4 days after surgery and did a home enima (useles) and then went to emerg where the xrayed me and did an enima. Xray is good to see just how impacted you are. I actually log my BM's because I never want to go through that again. Plus the risk is a perforated bowel, no thanks. good luck

I have had horrible problems with constipation since my RNY.
On the recommendation of my GI doc I took Lax A Day (Restoralax or Miralax) twice a day for 2 weeks. At the end of two weeks I could add another dose or take a dose away if I was going regularly. I dropped a dose and take it once per day. If I start to have issues I bump it back to 2 doses per day.
I add ground flax to my oatmeal every morning.
I try every day to up the amount of plain water I am drinking (always a battle for me).
He also recommended Senocot S once every week or two to make sure that bowel is really being emptied. Lots of people have regular BMs but do not actually empty their bowels.
I am going to pick up some unprocessed Bran and start adding that to my oatmeal or yogurt to see if that helps too.
When I had to do a bowel prep for a Endoscopy/Colonoscopy the regular course did not work for me. I had to do the whole thing all over again and take way more of the liquid to clean out the bowel plus add a bunch of Dulcolax. It was not fun!!

Hi Melissa
Thank you so much for posting - I've been thinking about you on and off all night. You"re in the best place with outstanding doctors who will know what the most effective options are. You"ve got a lot of people sending positive vibes your way, so try to stay strong and all will be well. My brother in law went through this and came out just fine, although I know it's tough. We're rooting for you!
