CPAP Machine
RNY on 11/21/12
I know I have serious apnea and I am wondering how long after getting your machine, did you start to sleep better.
When I did my study at the hospital, they slipped one on my during the night and I felt great when I woke up.
Does it take a few nights or weeks or months? I'm hoping to get mine on June 19th.

As long as you get used to the mask and tube, you should get almost immediate relief. If not it will take as long as it does for you to get used to the mask.

My experience was the machine produced better sleep right away! I have clausterphobia so the doctor from the slepp clinic started me on 3.5 mg zopliclone each night to help me drift off and not feel like its trying to smother me. My first sleep study showed I woke up about 200 times a night (geez, I wonder why I was tired) and with the machine the sleep study showed I did not wake once! My CPAP has a humidifier (I think they all do now) and that has helped greatly with sinus problems I have battled all my life, I used to wake up almost puking with mucus in my sinuses, now not a problem at all and don;t take the antihistimine anymore!
For me it was right away I slept better but it can take months to make up for the sleep deficit after yrs of not sleeping well.
I had insurance that paid for an upgraded machine and used it for almost 2 yr but by 4 months post RNY did not need it anymore. So think twice if you upgrade.
You can get $750 towards your CPAP. I liked nasal pillows, check to make sure you can exchange your mask if not comfortable. They should let you try for a few nights. It can take a few attempts to find the right one.
Good luck and enjoy good sleeps.
