I would insist on a referral to Dr. Wharton - really super clinic that deals with obeisty and obeisty-related issues - they will work with you and it was through them I was referred to Toronto Western for surgery - they are really really nice, understanding, helpful and informative. He has four locations including one in Burlington, Stoney Creek, St. Catharines and Toronto.

thank you for the information - really helpful - just googled it. I definitely have "acute telogen effuvium ... I'm just 6 months out from surgery (which was June 11 of this year)- so keeping fingers crossed it stops SOON. Silly, but my hair has always been my security blanket (which in itself is an issue I guess!)- as I've always been blessed with long, wavy really thick hair - having this pathetic thin trailing hair is just so far out of my comfort zone! I'm going to bite the bullet and cut to just above my shoulders after Xmas and hope it starts to come back! In the interim, definitely going to look for that Nioxin you recommended. Happy Holidays!

The technical name for it is telogen effluvium.

It usually resolves after about six months. You can google the term for more information.

It's really upsetting :( - thanks for the reply - I am going to look for Nioxin - not sure where I would find it but I will look! I'm going in February to get my hair cut which is in itself a bit traumatic - My hair is past my hips and will get it cut to my shoulders - just angry I didn't cut it before the hair loss started as it would have been a great contribution to Angel Hair for Kids (which my daughters and I have contributed to before).

Mine was still bad after two years. Most people's comes back after about six months. One day my hair stylist came to my door with a bag of products. They were Nioxin and it worked for me, but still took about six months of using the products before my hair was no longer thin.

Biotin did not grow any hair on my head, but i had a lot grow on my face and had to have full face waxings several times before I realized that it was the biotin and threw it away.

This is just my experience. I would not have spent the money on the Nioxin because I thought it was too expensive, but when it was given to me, i used it and was glad I did.

Tell me it eventually STOPS.... I've lost two-thirds of my hair - thankfully I had a lot of hair to begin with but still losing - and am devastated .... My braid (one braid) is literally smaller than what I used to make THREE braids with - particularly around my hairline in the front it's so sparse! I am taking biotin, not sure if it is helping or not. Any other suggestions?

Topic: RE: They moved up my surgery date and I'm freaking out

There's always going to be something that feels like it is not a perfect time! I was EXTREMELY ambivalent about surgery - (I had RNY) - would go back and forth - and actually postponed the surgery the first time it came up as I was still undecided (and there was a lot going on in my life). I restarted 8 months later - had to go through many of the steps again .... eventually (June 11)- I went through the surgery and it is the BEST thing I've ever done! I feel like a NEW woman - I am currently down 84 lbs (still 50+ to go) and plateauing (has been almost a month since I've lost, but no regain)- I can WALK - up to an hour at a time with my new rescue dog, I have SO much more energy, I can PUT my damn shoes on without having to have slip-ons (things many of us understand are a challenge) - ZERO regrets! Good luck and I think you'll be super happy with the results!

It's not his job to make the determination that you are an appropriate candidate for surgery - that's the bariatric centres job. You could bring articles like Dr. Sharma's article on bariatric surgery "why I support bariatric surgery" easily google-able. He's one of Canada's leading experts. Ultimately his job is to make the referral.

BUT since of course he will be involved in follow ups, he needs to be on board. If he isn't then I would seek a new doctor quite honestly. You need someone willing to educate themselves about surgery as well.

check out your local support groups as the members will often know which doctors are bariatric friendly.

Topic: Hello. I'm new here.

Hello my name is Eva and I'm morbidly obese.

I'm just starting the process and have booked an appointment with my family doctor for a referral. We have talked about WLS in the past and he was more on the nay side of things, suggesting fasting diets and other hard to follow changes as opposed to going the surgical route.

I'd like some tips on how to sway him to the WLS surgery side and get him to do the referral.

Also, has anyone gone to Guelph Centre for Bariatric Excellence? Any tips on how long the process takes?

Thank you!

I follow procedures to the letter. I will never know, but it might have accounted for me having no pain after surgery and recovering so quickly. I had surgery on a Tuesday, was home on Thursday, cooking and cleaning by Saturday and back to work on Monday.

Good luck with this. It was the best decision I made.
