Sorry, this is a little long, but I really need some opinions...

Maybe some one can shed some light on this for me. I have been diagnosed with GD. I had it with my son, but that was pre-surgery. Now, I have been maintaining my normal diet (added high fiber carbs into diet when I found out we were expecting) and my levels have been great, except for an odd high one here or there (which I look back on and fix what I did wrong). I send my readings to the nurse educator every few days via e-mail. She and I have discussed the things I don't eat because of the surgery (some things don't agree, some things get stuck, and some things I just DON'T eat etc). Today, she e-mails me back and tells me I need to incorporate bread, rice, potatoes and pasta into what I am eating. Uhhh... WHY?? I don't eat those things! I eat high fiber bread, high fiber wraps, fiber one bars, etc to get my carbs in. Why would I need to add these kinds of carbs into my diet? For example, today I got in 163 grms of carbs, with 52 grms of fiber. (this was a high day.) I am getting over 100 grams of carbs in per day.
Am I really doing something wrong here? Obviously I want my little man to be healthy, but I don't understand how adding more carbs in is going to do that! Can anyone shed light on this, or maybe this woman has just NEVER dealt with a post bariatric pt. before?
Thanks guys!

One of my biggest frustrations in life is the way HMO/PPO/insurance companies make our decisions for us as women, and mothers. Clearly, this is a case of that. It sounds like you are doing exactly as you need to, and unless your bloodwork shows that something needs to change, keep on keepin on, momma! xoxo

My GD nutritionist is like this.  You can tell her X because of the surgery and she tells you to do Y.  The snack before bed is the worst for me.  Because I technically don't have GD (just refused the test) I find it insulting to be eating food at 10 at night when I am not hungry.  Horrible habit.

So now I say I do but I don't do it.  I flat out lie.

Same with them wanting me to take Flintstones vitamins when I am almost 6 years post op.  They also want me to take Calcium Carbonate.  They don't know enough about WLS to be counseling us but they do.

Flintstones are for new post-ops (or those who are lovers of them).  I am fine with regular pills.

Thanks so much for this confirmation. I am 2 yrs post and I feel like I know my body really well now. I know what the baby needs, so I added it into my diet - and this woman is making me feel like I don't know..well, that I don't know anything! Grrr! Anyway, I don't mind tell her a little fib every once in a while, so I'll go with that! LOL.
Regarding the night time snack, it is a bad habit, and one that I have unfortunately gotten into because I am actually hungry at that time of night, which I find infuriating - but that's the way it is. I tried ignoring it for a few nights and was woken up an hour or so later with crazy hunger pains. So, now I just bite the bullet and have a snack. I hope I can give it up after Sammy decides to make his appearance!

Anyway, thanks for responding - misery loves company! LOL

It sounds like you eat healthy carbs, so just smile and nod and keep doing what you're doing.  I have gotten ****amamie advice from medpros before when I was pre-op and had just been diagnosed with PCOS.  One diabetes educator told me I could eat 5 exchanges worth of rice at dinner - I believe this is 2.5 CUPS of rice.  I never ate that much BEFORE my diagnosis, so why would I add more?  Bizarre.

A lot of medical professionals have not dealt with bariatric patients, or don't know that we need different treatment sometimes.  Sad.
