hi everyone, my name is jill, i had RnY done almost a year ago. i am down 80 lbs (i was hoping for more by this point) and have at least another 50 to go. hopefully more.
i had the iud put in december 7th, the day before my sons 2nd birthday. i have had so many problems with it... my periods never went away, in fact they increased, my weight loss has slowed down (others say one has nothing to do with the other but i dont know...), i have been breaking out like a 13 year old boy, i have increased hair growth on my face... a lot of people say none of these has anything to do with the iud but even if they dont, the increased period alone is enough to make me frustrated with it.
my concern is, i got pregnant on the pill, my husband got his daughters mother pregnant while she was on the depo shot. the chances of me becoming pregnant with or without protection seem to be on the higher side.
while we have discussed coming off the iud and having another baby, i dont think im healhy enough at only 11 months out. i still feel like im way too heavy to have a comfortable pregnancy, and of course the money worries and all that. but my biggest concern is, if i do become pregnant how will this affect my wls?
any advice? anyone been there?
thanks

First of all, sorry you're going through this. It sounds really sucky!

I think the IUD could definitely be the cause of your increased periods, slowed weight loss, zits etc...especially if you got the Mirena (this is the one that releases hormones right?). Everyone reacts differently to stuff like this.

As far as becoming pregnant, most doctor's recommend waiting until your weight is stable for several months before becaoming pregnant. If you're not comfortable getting pregnant now, I would say hold off.

hey tina thanks for writing back!
as "baby hungry" as i am right now pregnancy is one thing i know im not ready for. i work two jobs, one as a fund accountant and the other as a sex toy party consultant. and im in school. my husband is also working full time and going to school. so a baby right now is a tough pill to swallow. jordan (my 2 year old) is perfect in every way and i didnt want my kids far apart in age but my weight is the main factor im so afraid right now. what scares me the most though is i was on the pill and we used condoms when i got pregnant. my husband had a one night stand (she was a friend though so i dont know if thats considered a one night stand lol) but they used a condom and she was on the depo shot. she got pregnant after only having sex once. and i got pregnant while double protected. i was also told because i had pcos it was a possibility i wouldnt have kids until i lost weight. well at 230lbs i got preg. lol. i think thats where my major fear comes in. if i remove the iud... am i setting myself up for rny failure?! lol both my husband and i believe that whatever happens happens and we will work through it, but its still a scary thought. i hear stories about wls patients becoming pregnant and having a very difficult pregnancy then not losing any more weight but after reading posts on here it makes me a little more comfortable that IF it were to happen... it might be ok... lol
sorry just rambling, havent had enough coffee today haha
thanks again for writing back!!

I don't know enough about the IUD to know how you'd react to it being removed.

However...I wanted to applaud you  for recognizing that you're not physically ready after your surgery to have a baby.  I know that it happens - A LOT - for many of the women out here...and what's done is done and I wish them the best...but you are doing the right thing for you and any future baby you have by waiting until your body's ready to sustain a pregnancy in the healthiest manner possible for you AND your future baby.

In the meantime...be sure and use condoms and some other form of birth control if necessary to ensure that getting pregnant doesn't happen until your ready - physically, financially, mentally...whatever it takes to make you feel it's time.

Good luck....and you've done excellent in your weight loss so far.  Don't be hard on yourself.

thanks holly! only an hour on this board and its already very warm and welcoming! i cant wait to have another baby, but i think maybe in a year or so would be best. my OB said she would like to see me at 160 consistently for at least 3 months before she suggests we try again, which is 30lbs away but thats what we were heading for, but i wanted advice on the possibility. because with our track record lol... it makes me nervous!!!
thanks again for the encouragement!!!

If you're relying on your IUD as your only for on BC, use back up.

I'm 9 month out from surgery and still got pregnant with a Mirena IUD in place. It was a total shock to both DH and I. It's even the first time my OB has seen a pregnancy with Mirena that didn't end in a miscarriage early on.
My first pregnancy resulted in twins while on they pill so my track record with BC isn't the best.

I do think the Mirena slowed my weight loss and caused me to break out more. Since it's still hormonal BC, even if it's low dose, it's entirely possible your IUD is causing all your symptoms. I've even heard of women who had heavier periods with Mirena, which is supposed to lighten them.

LSUtigergirl- oh my god, you are totally on the same page as me, as far as getting preg with bc. im so glad im not the only one who agrees the iud can be causing slowed wl, acne, and ridiculous periods! im glad your pregnancies went well. im slightly jealous i always wanted twins. my best friend is a single dad to twin boys. tough!!!

I'm another one that got pregnant with the Mirena in place, 9 months post-op.

I had all the problems you are describing. I went to have it removed and they couldn't find it. Send me for an ultrasound to see where the IUD was, and they found a baby instead! I was already entering my second trimester by the time I found out. So, I would say use condoms as well as relying on your IUD.

I wanted, so badly, to not get pregnant before my 18th month mark. I now have an awful vitamin D deficiency, partly because I got pregnant too early on. I also had to add massive amounts of carbs into my diet to keep from losing anymore weight during pregnancy. But I have a DS so that might be a bit different for someone with an rny.
