Thank you for this thread. I have been taking Ambien every night for years and cannot sleep without it. I have tried stopping cold turkey, but could not fall asleep until daybreak. After a week of this I decided to keep taking it because the lack of sleep was interfiering with my mental state and parenting. I am not pregnant yet but have been worried about this for a while. I too have researched it online and found much conflicting info. The thing that scares me about Ambien, is that I can feel it orking within minutes. If I am not alseep within 15 minutes, I can do a bunch of stuff that I will have no recollection of the next day. Shop online, eat big meals, have conversations ect. Scary. If you cannot sleep without it, maybe try cutting your dose in half? I plan on stopping once I get pregnant, but am not looking foward to the lack of sleep :)
Good luck and keep me posted!

Every doctor and mother to to be their own opinions about certain things.  Ambien was perscribed to me by my OB las month when i couldnt sleep at all.  I took about 7 or 8 of them through a month and decided not to use them anymore because i was scared to get addicted.  But my OB said it was perfectly safe for mom and baby.

My OB in my last pregnancy said it was OK.  Of course it's great to avoid meds in pregnancy, but sometimes your health has to win out over the small risk of a problem, and living without sleep can literally kill you (I am sure many of us have almost gotten into car accidents or even HAVE gotten into them when sleep deprived!)

I've tried taking Ambien and don't like it at all because I've done things that I don't remember the next day (nothing bad though, lol!!) and it takes like 2 hrs for it to work for me. I had to take it after I went on an anti-depressant after I had my baby for PPD because the AD gave me short term insomnia and I couldn't sleep. I only took it like twice and hated it.

My doctor told me about Lunesta and said it was a MUCH cleaner drug (the ingredients) and my body wouldn't become dependant on it to sleep. I took it for a month and then went off after the insomnia wore off and was able to sleep fine. I would check into Lunesta if I were you, my doctor and OB highly reccomended it to me over Ambien.
