glucose test help

I had a glucose test at 18 weeks. I took it because my doc really wanted me to. Now He made me take another at  28 weeks. I dumped really bad and found out that my sugars were 158. I feel well, don't pee any more than I have since I was 18 weeks, and am not thirsty. I'm   afraid he might ask me to do a 3hr. Being high risk already due to my preemie son and GBP, I'm afraid to  refuse and have him drop me. Does anyone have a link to info about the unreliability of the glucose test for GBP patients? Or the alternate test for GBP? I want to give him some information to read if he asks me to do a 3hr.

ANy help/advice would be appreciated.

Your doctor is uneducated ... my perinatologist knows that a glucose test is not accurate in bypass patients, she has me do home monitoring with a glucose meter.  Maybe you could suggest that?

FWIW, my peak comes at 15 minutes and my valley is at the hour mark.  I process sugar very differently now.

A1C would give a good indication if you body is spending a lot of time with high glucose levels.

Are you getting regular ultrasounds?  Amniotic fluid levels can be an indicator you glucose levels ... high levels in mom are passed onto the baby and their bodies make more insulin and in turn they produce more AF.

No links .. sorry

God Bless! Jen

I did ask him about monitoring the first time, but he said he wanted the screen. I do get regular US, and fluid levels are good. (21 today the nurse said.)Baby's size is good too. What   is A1C?
Thanks for the reply

Have your surgeon work with your OB. Mine told me I was not to do any kind of glucose test at all. When I told my OB they wanted to talk to him.

An A1C is a three month blood sugar. Red blood cells (which you use to test blood sugars) live for three months so by taking a sample they can get a pretty good picture of how the last three months have been.

Hi. I am 19 weeks yesterday, and 2.5 years post GBP. I too talked to my doctor and told him I didn't feel comfortable doing the glucose test, because I know my body. I will pass out from trying to drink the drink with too much sugars. In addition... to the throwing up and dumping.

He said that they normally make all patients do it....but that he guessed it would be ok if I didn't do it. He didn't offer any alternative testing at all. I'm not sure how comfortable I am with my OB.

We are military stationed overseas in Belgium and so my OB doctor I see is a local Belgian. He speaks pretty good English, but his nurses and staff don't. I'm concerned I'm not getting the level of care I should be getting.

We don't have a a general surgeon let alone a GBP surgeon here at my base....so I'm a little concerned that my needs might not be understood and that I will get subpar care.

Anymore info you ladies have would be great. I think I am going to make an appointment with my primary care doctor at the military clinic to talk about the sugar monitoring....That sounds like a good idea.

Best of luck to you.

Hey Robin, Sorry you are having all this trouble.

My OB dr's gave me the option of doing the jelly bean test instead of drinking the solution which was nastily sweet before bypass, so can't even imagine now. YUCK   But we had the jellybean test yesterday morning.  I had to eat 19 Brach's jelly beans within 10 mins and they drew my blood 1 hr after that.  I did not have any problems with the jellybeans other than they were VERY SWEET but no dumping or anything.  You may if you would like to try the jellybean test try that.  The Brach's jellybeans have 30 gms of Sugar in 24 but I only had 19 so that is a total of 23.75 gm of sugar which is still alot dont get me wrong, but I tolerated it better than I thought b/c it was also on an empty pouch.  We won't know the results til the end of this week or the beginning of the next but with me having HYPOglycemia issues I don't think it is gonna be high.  Best of Luck with the rest of your pregnancy and hope things get better with the glucose test.

I did fasting blood sugars every 2 months and thats all we did. They checked my levels by blood tests after not eating from midnight till I got there at 8 in the morning. The hardest part was not eating lol. I refused the test but the doc I had was nice about it and said its my choice and that the blood tests would work fine.
