How many of you all used a high risk OB doctor, maternal fetal medicine, during your pregnancy? If so, did u request one or automatically referred? And also if so, wat was ur experience with the high risk doctor?

I saw regular OBs with co-care from MFM during my first pregnancy, as a pre-op.  I'm post-op now and seeing regular nurse-midwives at the high-risk clinic and at a regular clinic.  I'm trying to avoid a high-intervention birth this time around because I didn't like how that shook out the first time with early induction attempts and a c-section that may have been avoidable, and while I appreciate peris and OBs for what they do, I think they can be very intervention-heavy.  I am dealing with minor blood pressure issues ****asional small spikes) and because my BP was bad in my first pregnancy, they are watching me closely in this one.  I prefer to have my extra monitoring with the midwives because of their attitudes about induction (we all want to avoid one since I'm trying for a vaginal birth after c-section.)  I would have preferred to avoid any high-risk treatment but I am OK with it because they have a good track record for VBAC and low c-section rate.

I would not request high-risk treatment unless you feel your current provider is not taking your concerns seriously and that there is real potential for problems.  I know some WLS women think all post-ops should be high-risk but I do not agree with that assessment.  We might require some extra bloodwork and different counseling, but IMO many of us are low or normal risk because pregnancy outcomes after WLS are usually very good  and better than those in pre-op moms.  Don't be afraid to help your OB or MW learn about WLS, though.

I am using one but only for ultrasounds. I had to see them for my first trimester screening and they wanted me to see me back monthly after the regular anotomy ultrasound. They are doing this just to make sure there isn't a problem with the babies growth. I was also seeing them cause of my age. The told me 2 or 3 appointments ago that age wasn't even an issue now since I am doing so well. The WLS really isn't an issue either since I have a little chunk growing. Other than the ultrasounds, I see my reg OB.

I shall now be know as Hagatha: Queen of the queens.

Really depends on how comfortable you are with your ob. I had a bad one with my son (born post op) and he turned out preemie. I have a much better ob this time and he is working with a high risk hand in hand. I feel very comfortable with them and hope to go to term this time. 29 weeks and counting!.
