What are your thoughts on Cord Blood Banking?

We are just starting to look into it... I am not sure. On one hand I think yes, but on the other I think is it still too new? I don't know.

If we decide to do it we have to incorporate it into the baby budget.

I donated my last child's cord blood. It may help someone.

I think it could be beneficial, like stem cell research.

I understand it is very expensive to keep your own cord blood (I think the expense is in the storage of it). But you can DONATE it for free, right? So I guess I can't see any reason NOT to. Although my mind is wide open on this subject. I'd like to see what everyone else thinks. I may be missing something obvious.

We are considering banking as well. The cost is high, but I would rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it!

Lianne, you know what the costs are on banking? I thought about doing it as well, but don't know what the costs are.

i wanted to but couldnt afford it. what i did instead was delayed cord clamping. its just has beneficial in that the baby reabsorbes all the nutrients in the cord that gives an immediate boost to the immune system. look it up.

The total cost in Canada is about 3000. But you can pay approx 900 to set it up and for your first year, and then its 125/year for storage.

Roughly...

This is the fee schedule here in Edmonton.. About $860 set up and $1000 for 10 year storage. Not bad.

There are two primary choices in life; to accept conditions as they exist, or accept responsibility for changing them.

I wanted to, but couldn't afford it. I felt pretty bad about it, but then I spoke to some of the attorney's I work with and they said they couldn't afford it either. If an attorney can't afford it, then I def can't on my Admin Assistant salary. I still wish I could've though.

I was just going to ask about this!

I am definitely going to do it. If my baby can help someone in any way, I'm going to do everything that I can.

It's free where I am. You just tell your doctor (if your hospital is on the list) that you want to donate and that's it. There's a screening process that I have to check into, though.
