extra pre-natal vitamins?
I am 8 weeks along and just had my "confirmation" apt. The nurse prationer is not familiar with Gastric bypass and pregnancy. She said that when I see the Dr. on the 29th, that he would be instructing me better but he was not too experienced in it either. Will I need extra pre-natals? I am high risk bc of advanced age, but will I also be because of the bypass. How many calories a day. I can hardly eat now, as I feel yucky, give me a sample day of what you eat... Thanks for any and all help!!
My dr didnt really know a lot either, so i took her prescription prenatal (which makes me feel ill.. like morning sickness) and i was also doing the vita gummies.. chewable gummy vitamins just in case. I checked with my nutritionalist on teh gummy vits, and she said they were fine as is, but i still double up some days. -- i also switched from the prescription vitamin to an otc one from walgreens. no point in feeling sick all the time!!
I found after month 3.. i am hungry all the time, o si essentiall eat small meals every 2 hours or so. or graze throughout the day, i dont really restrict my food either, i go with the cravings. Its mostly fruit though for me! im just trying to get in my protein, because i often really really dont feel like meat. makes me.. yuckkkky.

I appreciateyour thoughts. I sure wish we had an OB that specialized in post gastric pregnancies it would help out alot. I guess I will know more when I go on the 29th, but was thinking that this first trimester is so very important for vitamins and things, I would have thought that they would have helped me out with all of this alot sooner than this. Oh well, I will see what happens when I go next...
I find that I have no cravings, but am struggling eating meat, per say, but am hungry too. I also feel that my clothes have gotten tighter in the tummy but not the legs or but. Kinda frustrating to have to go out and buy clothes again when I just started fitting in a size 12, I am back up.. I think I will try to find some maternity pants... I will gladly do it though as I have waited a long time for this moment..

I just talked to my Surgeons office today...They told me to just eat healthy and not extra as of yet unless you are finding that you need it. As for vitamins they want me on One chewable multi with 18mg of iron (that i was on originally except i was taknig 2) and ALSO a prenatal vitamin. Along with a 500mcg B12 and 1000-1200 mg of Calcium Citrate with vitamin D....hope this helps :)
I'm 8 weeks as well. I had both my "confirmation" appointment and an appointment at my surgeon's office last week. My OB was unsure what to suggest as far as the meds and told me to bring them all (she gave me a ton of smaples) and ask the nut what she thought.
First of all, I don't know if you've actually SEEN prenatal vitamins yet, but most of the samples I got were at least an inch and a half long and I wasn't comfortable swallowing them at all for fear of them getting stuck. So I pointed out the ones I was comfortable taking. When comparing to what I already take, neither the nut nor my surgeon thought I needed to be on them. They DID suggest asking my OB how much Folic Acid I should be on. They didn't seem concerned about my calling right away though, as the Flintstones contain some Folic Acid. My vitamin break down (in case it helps) is:
2 Flintstones complete
100mg B-1
3 630mg Calcium Citrate with Vitamin D
2500mcg B-12 every other day
2000iu D-3 every other day
As far as food goes, I've had BAD morning sickness, so I've been going with whatever sounds good at the time. My thought is that it's better to feed the baby something, then not be able to eat, or throw it up afterwards. I've been doing well on fluids. Lots of green tea, peppermint tea and some sugar free hot chocolate, as well as a diet ginger ale in the morning and lemonade (made with Splenda) throughout the day. I'm also big on orange juice right now, and Juicy Juice, which I cut half and half with water so that it's not so sweet.
I got a hand out on changes to nutritional needs when I met with my surgeon. If you'd like me to post what it says, I'll be more than happy to.

wow, ok, Idont take any othre supplement vitamins. I only take B12 inj once a month and the prenatal vit. It is huge, but I have been successful so far. I have had several blood tests and all my vit levels are good as well. Not sure if I need to add anything. I guess I will discuss it all at the next apt. but still I know now is the time I need those essential vitamins, yet the Dr. office doesn't seem to wirried that I won't be meeting with them until the 29th. Oh well. I would love to see what all they give you, and if I should be doing more...
Thanks and congratulations...
Thanks and congratulations...
Okay, the instructions are:
minimum 64oz caffeine free fluid a day (which I do anyway)
Additional 300 calories a day - 1500 a day minimum
Protein - add 10gm a day above post surgery goal.
Multivitamins 2 prenatal/day during 1st, 1 a day during rest of pregnancy (like I said, they seem to think I'll be okay just adding folic acid and keeping on with my flintstones)
Calcium Citrate with Vitamin D 1500-2000 mg/day
vitamin B12 1000mcg/day
Iron - as needed based on blood tests
They say to eat more times a day (8 instead of 6, for instance), rather than eat more at each meal. Switch to 2% or whole milk if tolerated, add cheese to soups, sauces and casseroles, use milk whenever possible, add hard boiled eggs to salads, add chopped meats to salads or eggs, supplement with protein shakes if needed.
