I had vsg almost 3 months ago.  just wondering why they say don't get pregnant for a year.  I only had 60 pounds to lose total.  I was never super heavy.  I have lost 30 and really only have about 20 more to go.  was thinking about trying for a baby in a few months.  can someone please tell me the risks of being pregnant now.  i weigh 164 lbs and i'm 5'6.  thanks.  my doctor never went over anything.  but i also had my surgery in mexico.  thanks

Well I had a different surgery (RNY) and also have a lot more to lose. I got pregnant just before my three month surgiversary mark. I know for me my doctors have concerns about several things -  probably the most pressing is me being able to get the adequate nutrition I need this soon out.

They are also concerned because that first year post-surgery is considered still part of the healing and adjustment time. To add trying to support the nutrition and well-being of a developing baby on top of your own healing is a pretty large burden.

That being said they are all committed to trying to make this a safe and healthy pregnancy for me. Although I will love this baby to bits I do wish I had gotten pregnant further out. Just gotta figure things happened this way for a reason!

Nutrition. SIze of the baby when he/she isborn. Reinjuring your surgery site. Hernias and you have a "timeline" to actually lose the weight.
They want you to be stable after surgery with vitamins etc...even with me being almost 2yrs out from mine I still wasnt stable with vitamins etc...
Takes your body awhile to adjust to the excessive weightloss to get hormones straightened out etc...
What if something went wrong here in the next couple of months that needs surgery and your pregnant? You will either have to suffer or lose the baby. Sorry for being blunt. They want you to be in the right "mind" when you do get pregnant etc...
Bottom line is to make sure you heal from stitches and sutures and swelling and all that fun stuff that comes along with surgeries..

They give a general guideline because most people are stilling losing or just getting to goal about a year out. And all the reasons listed above cause problems for pregnancy. If at about 6-8 months you are stable with your weight and your vitamins are all on track I'd talk with your OB/Surg regarding your personal risks. I got pregnant a month before my year mark. VSG is alittle different than RNY and everyone's case is different.

I'd also like to note.. enjoy those skinny sizes for abit before you get into pregnancy with the weight gain. I was just enjoying shopping where ever I liked when I got pregnant. Now all those great skinny jeans are worthless.. at least for a year or how ever long it takes to get back to prebaby weight. I am fighting not to get upset at the 10 lbs I gained since pregnant. Remember being pregnant adds alot of mental issues too. Hope that helps!

I had vsg on March 22, 2010.   I'm pregnant and due on Jan 11.   So yes I got pregnant 2 weeks after surgery!!!  Everything has went great, no complications, and feel better this pregnancy than in the past bc I'm lighter!!  I have continued to lose weight even though I'm pregnant.
