Sugar- BEWARE!! Ended up in L&D
Hi ladies!! Well, I had what I thought was quite a scare this morning and thought I would share. So, I know we have had discussion topics on sugar and how much we can tolerate now that we're preggo. I have NEVER been a dumper...I eat sugars and get quite sluggish, but that's about it. Last night was a rough night for me for sleeping. I woke up at around 2 with extreme thirst. I grabbed a bottle of water and on my way back to my bedroom just had to pass that pan of brownies that was on my kitchen island. I took a small brownie and ate it like I normally have. About 20-30 minutes later, I started getting heat flashes, my stomach was ROCK hard, sweating, my heart was racing and I felt like I literally could not breath. I awoke hubby, who immediately got my Gram on her way over and we left for the ER. The whole ordeal continued and we were taken to L&D. I was hooked up to monitors and given an IV for hydration. My vitals- my heart rate was throw the roof, bp was 130/92 and I was still having shortness of breath. Well, I was finally able to calm down. They at first thought it was a panic attack of some sort, but it turns out I was having a severe dumping episode. I was in shock to say the least. I was kept on IV hydration for awhile, monitored for about 4 hours and finally released to go home. It was a VERY scary ordeal.
The morale of my story- be very careful with sweets if you're an RNY patient. Like I said before, I wasn't a dumper and even wished some times I was, but last night was extreme and no fun at all. The OB on the floor instructed me to stay away from sugar for the entire rest of my pregnancy as much as I can because they're not sure if my being slightly dehydrated on top of the dumping caused my reactions. Be very careful ladies! I don't wish this upon anyone!
I got some much needed rest finally and I feel much much better!! Baby is doing wonderfully and the dr didn't see any other cause for concerns. :)

Sorry to hear you had such a scare, but am glad that it was 'just' a dumping episode from hell. Stay away from the brownies...they're obviously NOT your friend. It would've been kinder though if they'd have not kicked you in the teeth so to speak to get that message across.

But damn it Holly....that brownie looked and smelled so good and it was calling my name!!!! I'm so overjoyed that it was just a wake up call and didn't cause too much stress for me or baby. He's been kicking me like crazy now and thankfully all is good now. I think I got greedy and tried one too many sweets and over the limit I went...ahhh!!! But thank you for the well wishes!
Glad to hear all is well now with you and your little man!
I know with both of my post op pregnancys (pre-pregnancy, I had no dumping) but with the pregnancys I was super sensative!
The good thing (I think!), is that after each pregnancy, I am now sensative to sugars that I wasn't before! I can eat some, but NOTHING like I could before the 2 pregnancys!

I was completely caught off guard by this dumping. I honestly didn't have a clue what was going on...I haven't been the poster child for staying away from sugary foods, but I was also experiencing some low blood sugar levels and the dr had said to expect some cravings. Needless to say, I will be feeding these cravings with much more natural things now like fruits and yogurts and such.
I'm kind of hoping that I do become a little more sensitive now to sugar after all because I hate that I'm able to even consume it if I wanted to. I do KNOW how to say no, but my fat brain says go for it of course.
Thanks so much!! :)
