When I was younger I had a normal cycle, but as my weight went up it became a distant memory. I wanted to know if your cycle return to normal after WLS because I haven't had one since I was maybe 15. Now at 31 and several cycles of Provera I just want a normal cycle so that I can have children one day.

I had not had a normal cycle since May of 2000 when I was diagnosed with PCOS. There were years that went by that I would only have maybe 2 periods in the whole year! I had my surgery in September 2009 and my cycles came back normally every month prior to my sugery because I had lost 50 pounds on my own prior to my surgery! So from August 2009 until March 2010 I had a normal cycle (every 30 days).  I then conceived my daughter in April of 2010 (not recommended so soon as I was on birth control and wanting to wait the 12-18 months post op) but now we have a 10 week old healthy precious baby girl! So to your answer, YES, it is possible to have your cycles come back normally and have children after weight loss whether it be with the help of sugery or weight loss without surgery.

Thanks Teresa I am taking precautions now and doing a lot of research to prevent me from getting pregnant right off. I've heard a few people say that their cycles are really heavy and I dealt with that when they were normal.

My period was very irregular before my surgery and was regular up until I got pregnant. I just had my little girl so I am hopig that I will continue having regular periods.

Laurie, I heard that some women still stayed irregular after because it had been so long since their hormones were normal......but that makes me feel so much better. Congratulations on the birth of your baby girl.

My periods were never regular.  I started when i was 13 and started becoming morbidly obese when i was 8.  I had my WLS when i had just turned 39 and now 18 mos later (and 135 lbs less) my cycles are like clockwork so regular!  We're TTC now, got pg in Nov on the 1st try (but had a MC.)  so yes, there is hope!

Good luck on your WLS journey and definitely work with your surgeon at least 1 year after your WLS to clear you for pregnancy.  You and your future baby will be a LOT healthier during and after pregnancy if you wait at least 1 year after your WLS and once your weight loss has stablized.

Thanks for the information...I want mine to be regular because I have heard that not having them can cause ovarian cancer and that scares me. I'm sorry for your loss and good luck and I will be definitely be working with my surgeon to prevent a pregnancy.
