I guess I need to go back to shakes???

The not using protein shakes sounds off to me too.

My NUT does not like us using protein shakes after the first 6 weeks due to she says it is lack of planning, but even though I can consume more food than just after surgery, it is difficult for me to consume 90g of protein just from meat and such.  Even if I eat meat at all three meals, I am a bit short and then cannot get in any fruits or veggies.

And personally if I plan for a protein shake and a banana for breakfast, then that in my book is planning.  Normal thin people do things like that.

So in my book I would go for the protein shakes until you can have meat and even then, do so if you need to.

Get the protein shake powder and you an either make the shakes or add the powder to your plain yogurt.  I also have bought skim milk powder and add a few tbs to my yogurt, other shakes, my regular milk, cereal, oatmeal etc...its a great protein that is non fat and adds a punch when you need it! Good luck!! YOU GOT THIS!!!

There are a lot of plans and I've read many people who are also discouraged from using the shakes.  However, my nut had me drinking 2-3 shakes a day for my first 3 weeks - she said protein was VITAL to my healing.  After that, I've been told that I can have them as I like, but I should find that I can get my protein from regular foods.  She's right - now I just have a shake every once in a while as a treat - I mix one up with fruit and ice and have me a thick low calorie, high protein milkshake!

If I read your post correctly, it looks like you only took in 146 calories and 10 gms of protein today. I'm guessing that you haven't taken in much liquids either. You need to contact you doctor, I'm pretty sure you can't survive on that. My guess is that you and your doctor are having a problem communicating. Let me tell you something, its not just alot of vets that drink protein shakes, id be willing to bet that 85 or 90 percent of all vets, whether they are 2 weeks out or 2 years out are supplementing their diet with some kind of protein drinks.

This was yesterday, but yes, you read correctly on the numbers. The liquids are not a problem, I drink 5 or 6 16.9 oz bottles of water a day.

Have never drunk a protein shake nor eaten a protein bar and I'll be 10 years out in July!   There is an accepted 30, 60, 90 regime for the many of us who have not found protein shakes necessary and many surgeons only like people to use them for a couple of weeks.

It is wholly possible to be healthy without them!

ETA:  Also, the term veteran or vet applies to people who are 5 years out from surgery - definitely NOT 2 weeks or 2 years!

Thanks for the response! I was hoping for at least one positive comment.

Follow YOUR doctor's plan and not what people on here think - you chose him, he has his plan for a reason and it is wholly possible to make this journey without a protein shake - many more of us do than you would imagine!

If you have any doubts, contact your NUT or doctor's office for advice on their plan!

I am a 10 year vet and have never had a protein shake ...   just because I am outnumbered does not mean I am wrong in my advice to stick to YOUR plan!

Kim,

Quick question. How were you able to get your protein in early on? This is still a struggle for me. I am still only getting about 40-50 g of protein a day, even after going back to one protein shake a day. And I am not eating anything extraneous, just protein or protein rich foods. I am inspired by you and your ability to maintain after 10 years. Can you remember how you got your protein in the early weeks after surgery? It is so hard to eat much of anything that even when I am counting on that serving of protein, it is generally cut in half because I just can't eat very much.
