Enteric coated medicine...

So since RNY is a malabsorption surgery, do you chew your medicine??  I take an 81 mg aspirin per day (heart)...Enteric coated.

Just wondering if you do anything different with enteric coated medicines??  Have there been any studies to show there is no difference in how they are taken and absorbed??  Thanks for any info and data.  Brian

At seven plus years postop I take my medicine the same way I always have.  The only thing I chew are chewable vitamins and my chewable calcium.  You are further out than I am though - have you only now decided to investigate this? Has something happened that has somehow made you question your first almost ten years of experience?

As far as data and such, which I think you also may have mentioned regarding a different drug in previous posts, it would probably be a good idea for you to google those questions yourself and compile  statistics and such that way.  We here on OH are a relatively small sample of the post-bariatric surgery community.  Surely the information you seek is relatively easily accessible or certainly as accessible to you as it would be to any of us.

If you are concerned, you can just cru**** to break the coating.   I don't take any ER meds, but  I've never found any pills in the toilet, so assume everything is being absorbed ...

I just don't buy any enteric coated medicine.

It was my understanding that we are not to take anything enteric coated or extended release.  Wouldn't the question be solved by purchasing the chewable 81mg aspirin?

We had talked about this issue over the years...No conclusions, just projections/thoughts.  I'll try, but I don't know if I will be able to find studies on the subject...Not an easy search.  Everybody wants (pays) to get to the top of searches (Google/Yahoo!/Ask), it becomes really hard to find quantifiable information.  I use good quality chewable vitamins.  I think with all my meds (unless told not to by doctor/pharmacist) I will chew and eat with food/milk.  Now as I recall, I would ask many doctor and pharmacist about this subject.  Most/all did not want to guess or project because of liability.   Brian
