My surgeon requires waiting for a UGI the day after surgery, then keeping the protein down. I didn't get to leave for 4 days and even then I lied about the protein. My experience is not the norm. A friend just had DS and left the next day.

My surgeon said that some insurance companies only pay for one night. I had surgery on a Friday and they were talking about letting me go home on Saturday. I had tightness in my chest (which from what my surgeon explained prior to surgery was gas), the staff said because I had what they documented as "chest pains" they made me stay until Sunday afternoon.

I felt better each day and I feel like I would have been fine to go home on Saturday (certainly would have gotten more sleep). Also, my drain caused me some serious shoulder pain on Sunday (which was also said to be gas), thankfully after suffering for 7-8 hours the Dr. instructed the nurses to remove my drain because it was pushing on my diaphragm causing the pain. Soon as they took it out, the pain was gone. What a relief.

Good luck!

3 nights, but that would because I had surgery in Mexico and they do 3 leak tests and make sure you are 110% before they send you on your journey back home.  I would have been fine 1 night or even as a day surgery with after care for 24 hrs.

Two nights for me. They told me to expect a one to two night stay and b/c I couldn't keep anything down the first day, they kept me a second. I was really grateful for it though, in some ways, b/c I too didn't want to be home alone and have something go wrong. I spiked a fever also...but it turned out to be ok :-)
