Is there such a thing as too much coffee?

I've started drinking somewhere around 3 cups of coffee a day. Sometime the acid affects me more than others and I take half of a tums. Has anyone been told that too much coffee could actually *hurt* our stomachs or is it just *recommended* not to drink more than a cup a day?

Thanks!

Hello chunkymonkey1991,

Yes, when I drink too much coffee,  I definitely feel that acid in my stomach.  It's something I have to be very careful about because since my VSG, I've suffered from acid reflux.  I take (2) 40mg Protonix per day.  Normally, I can have one cup a day and that's all.  Also, I can't have it on an empty stomach, it's best to drink a protein shake first.

I have found that protein shakes that contain caffeine don't bother my stomach as much though.  I usually have a Click protein shake in the morning, and that gives me both the protein I need and a shot of caffeine.  It works great.

Good luck to you!

Tums may not cut it for acid reflux/heartburn. I highly recommend taking omeprazole 20mg. It takes 24 hours to kick in but it works like a charm. I have acid reflux after being sleeved and I would never know I had it ever since I started taking omeprazole. It keeps it completely at bay and I do not have issues at all drinking coffee when I'm on it.

Too much coffee? Seriously! I must be a dead woman. The day after I got out of the hospital I had to pour a cup. It sounded wonderful but when I tried to drink it I got queasy. At least I got to dip my lips in it. When I could tolerate coffee again my norm has been 3 cups per day and once in a while a 3rd. If my tummy complains I tell it to shut up until after the first one is in. I too take Prilosec and if I am consistent with it I don't usually have a problem.

I guess my advice would be to drink the three if your tummy tolerates it.

My doctor said no coffee until 6 weeks out.  And then it needs to be decaf - I am missing my cup of coffee in the morning very badly.  It is the most confusing thing for me to see how many different eating plans that get recommended.

I had to wait two weeks before coffee was permitted on my post-op diet.  I could only tolerate about 1/2 cup at first, and now 3 months out, I sometimes drink 2 cups a day.

They said decaf coffee could be counted in my water total for the day, but cafinated should not.  So I've been sticking to decaf.  I do use half and half, though that is not on the diet.  I figure the 40 cals won't hurt and the coffee just wasn't fun without  it.

I think that if your tummy will tolerate the coffee, then you should be ok.

good luck,

Carol

My RD recommended keeping keeping coffee/caffeinated beverages to less than 1/3 of you daily water consumption...ie if you drink 100 oz of water a day you should not drink more than 33 oz of coffee.

I drink 60 ounces a day or more, decaf.  I have also always used cream- sugar free caramel machiatto.  My NUT asked about dropping it, but once she realized the extend of my crack addiction she said to just leave that alone and work on the other areas.  If I had acid issues I would be devastated.  No issues to date overall.
