Still seeing myself as being fat

Hi everyone. I was wondering if anyone else has this problem. In June I weighed around 215 pounds and when I look in the mirror, I still see myself being at that weight. In pictures I notice my weight loss, but, whenever I look in the mirror I don't. Right now I'm at 145 pounds and I had my surgery in September. I'm wondering if maybe it's because I lost the weight so fast and my mind still isn't used to it or something like that. Does anyone else still have problems with body image? I'm down 70 pounds since then and I'm not really sure why I still feel like I'm so heavy.

I'm about 20 months post op and I still do a double-take when I glance in a mirror. I expect to see the fat Carol, not the thin one. I was told it can take about 18 months for your mind to catch up with your body in body image.  It certainly is taking a while for me to get use to my new image.

best wishes,

Carol

It can take months -sometimes a year or more- for your brain to catch up to your weight loss and how you really look.

I will be honest, I still myself better in photographs than I do standing in a mirror. For me a photo is still a much better way for me to gauge my size. The other thing I use is my clothes.

I don't have anything to add yet but I do find it interesting that both you and Karik see themselves better in pictures than in the mirror. When I was my biggest I would look in the mirror and have no doubt that I was fat. However, when I saw myself in the rare picture I was always like HOLY COW, I am FAT!!!

It will be interesting to see how I relate to this discrepancy in self perception as I continue to lose.

Well I see myself skinnier with my clothes on but when I see myself getting in the shower I don't like what I see.

Me too. Exactly what I think/see everyday. I am very good at hiding my body in clothes. Maybe that is why I have become addicted to buying clothes, especially when I can buy off the sale racks and at the Goodwill. Got some awesome buys at both Goodwill and Salvation Army Thrift store.

I so get this!  It took -70 lbs for people to start really noticing, including myself.  I have about 30 more to go...but feel like I have so much more to lose.  My mind has not caught up either...

I still don't "see" my weight loss yet. I know I've lost but my brain is slow to catch up.

I have the same problem.  And now i am less than 2 lbs from my goal and I keep thinking, maybe I should lose 5 more.  Last night I went to Zumba and when i would see myself in the mirror, I did like what I saw, and when I go to try on new clothes I think, "this will never fit" and it does.  Sometimes I look at my tiny plate of food and think, "that will never fill me up."  LOL - the mind plays some crazy games!
