Chewing gum was the hardest habit for me to give up after surgery. What do you all do to freshen your mouth? I was using Listerine Strips but they are expensive!! Any ideas out there ?? Thanks! Karen H.

I went through the same thing.  My RD suggested a single tic tac since it has so few calories.

I still chew gum almost everyday!  Hardest thing for me is not swallowing it...I've always done that!

I avoided gum for a while after surgery but I've never been one to swallow my gum so I still have a piece in the car once in a while.  They don't really have that many calories so I personally don't think it's that big a deal.  I used to be a smoker so chewing gum in the car helps me cope with not being able to have a cigarette.

I'm curious, what happens if you swallow gum?  I was never told about this and now I have to know!

My surgeon wrote a prescription for gum at the hospital. She wanted me to chew gum after surgery. She said it would help get my stomach moving! I'm still chewing after 7 weeks. Of course its gotta be sugarless and I only chew it for about 1 minute and I'm done. I'm so afraid I'll swallow it.

I chew gum all the time - no one has ever told me not too.

I was never told gum was off limits. Considering I haven't swallowed gum since I was a child, this makes sense.

I can chew gum with no problems. Once in a while I'm able to walk while chewing gum.

I don't like chewing gum.  I eat sugar free mints...I like the ones that are strawberry or raspberry.  I think the brand is Ice Breakers.  The Listerine strips are too strong for me.
