Greetings, all! I just want to thank the very busy people who took time out to post to my surgery page. When I was two months post-op from WLS, I found out I had thyroid cancer (the thyroid was otherwise "normal," so that wasn't why I had gotten obese). I have since had a total thyroidectomy and partial neck dissection (removal of a bunch of lymph nodes that all had cancer, too), and now have completed a course of radiation. I'm hopeful that the cancer is gone, but it will take some close tracking in the coming months and years.
Because I lost a lot of weight in my neck after WLS, I found the lump in the neck that that led the doctors to find the thyroid cancer. Who knows how long it would've stayed there if I hadn't lost the weight and noticed it. So, I already feel that WLS has saved my life, or at least helped me find and get treatment without any further delay, as I had no other detectable symptoms of cancer at the time. I'm also positive that because of WLS, I'm already much healthier, and I'm sure I bounced back from the thyroid surgery and had an easier time with radiation than I would have had if I were still in my pre-WLS shape.
At five 1/2 months out now, I'm down 86 pounds. Overall, feel good and optimistic about my health. I would add my voice to the others who say to keep on fighting for insurance approval for your WLS (if you don't have it yet), look forward with confidence to the results of a good decision if you're awaiting surgery, and hang in there if you're a fresh post-op in recovery. It IS worth it all!
