Three Months Out

Apr 18, 2011

Today I am officially 3 months out from my surgery date, down 45.5 pounds and 31 inches.  This has not been a good month for me diet-wise.  I have not been eating right and have really fallen back into my sweet addiction.  Troubles on the home front and between the Girl Scout cookie time and Easter candy, I've been a bad girl for sure.  I am hanging in there and hoping to get back on track in a very serious manner.  I enjoy reading everyone's updates.  It is very inspiring and the only thing that  keeps me somewhat on track.  I was exercising a lot, treadmill daily and pilates 3 times a week.  I ended up with the flu 3 weeks ago and it totally wiped me out.  I just got back on the treadmill yesterday and my legs felt like lead.  I'm determined to keep moving because that is the best secret to losing.  Hope everyone is doing well.

Discouraged

Mar 22, 2011

I am feeling so discouraged.  My weight has been the same for days and days.  I know everyone says to not weigh yourself daily, but I stay better focused on everything during the day  when I know where I stand with the scales.  I'm on the treadmill every day but Sunday and I have started doing 45 minutes of Pilates 3 times a week.  I read other posts and I know people have stalls but it seems everyone is losing weight faster than I am.  I am SO concerned that maybe this is where I will settle out.  I have so far to go still and I am just so sad about this.  Part of me knows how silly I'm being but there is that other part that knows all my previous dieting efforts only took me so far before I stalled and lost interest.  I'm down 34 pounds so far but it has been this way for awhile now.  Where do I go from here?  I feel like I'm doing everything this 51-year-old body can.

One month out

Feb 18, 2011

Today is my one month surgiversary.  Hard to believe one month ago today I was at the hospital prepping for surgery.  As of today I have lost 22 pounds and 15.5 inches.

I'm feeling better in most ways, but finding that my new sleeve is rather finicky.  One week I can eat something and the next week my sleeve throws it back.  There have been a few challenges but all-in-all everything seems to be going well.  I would do it all over again and look forward to what changes each month will bring.

I was taking 2 blood pressure pills only a month ago and am not taking any and my blood pressure is well within normal limits and actually running low at times.

I have been so inspired by some of the blogs and posts here.  THAT has been the most encouraging thing.  My husband thinks things are "not normal" at times but I can refer to others having similar challenges and feel confident that this too shall pass.

I hope everyone has a lovely day.  It's going to be 55 and sunny here, which is a nice change for February.

Four weeks postop

Feb 15, 2011

It has been 4 weeks since my surgery and I am 21 pounds lighter than the day I left for the hospital.  Some people lose faster than me but I'm 51 now so I kind of expected that.  As long as I'm losing I'm happy and 21 pounds in 4 weeks is nothing to complain about.

I wish I could ignore the scales sometimes because it is a little discouraging when I'm eating so little and the needle stays in the same place.  I seem to have more restriction than I did just a little over a week ago.  Things I could eat then I cannot eat now.  I have been hugging the waste can every day for several days now.  I don't think I am eating faster or bigger bites.  It is now taking me 2 -3 hours to drink my protein shake in the morning.  I've not managed to get my protein requirements in for a few days.  I'm going back to just the shakes and liquids for a couple of days to rest my sleeve and see if that helps.

I really need to get back on the treadmill.  The last time I walked I ended up throwing up immediately afterward.  I've been a little hesitant to return.  I guess I just need to pull up my big girl panties and get moving.  LOL

All-in-all, things are good and I'm happy with my decision.  My pants are looser and I can see a bit of a difference.  I'm going to check my measurements each month and my official one month mark is on Friday so I will post those results then.

Hope everyone is doing great and has a great day.  I can't wait until spring!!!!

Two weeks postop!

Feb 01, 2011

Two weeks ago today I had my surgery and as of this morning I have lost 14 pounds.  I have been very careful to get the 60+ grams of protein daily and between 800 and 1000 calories, which is what my nutritionist recommends.  It is nice to be able to change things up a bit now that I'm off the full liquids.  My son and his girlfriend bought me a Magic Bullet for Christmas and it is perfect for blending the foods I am allowed to have.  I did have a Lean Cuisine lasagna last night and it was just horrible tasting to me, so I didn't eat it, had to cross it off my journal and then prepared a piece of salmon which was better.  I used to like the lean cuisine but my tastes have definitely changed.  My new friend is the sugar-free fudgecicles.  Yummy.  They are 40 calories and 3 grams of protein.  Inevitably I end up a few proteins short in the evening- a perfect excuse to get one from the freezer.   I am EXTREMELY tired all the time.  My blood pressure is running low and I am not currently taking any medication, where I was taking 2 pills daily just 2 weeks ago.  Yesterday my blood pressure was 90/51 and by the afternoon when my husband checked it was 79/43.  I thought I might be a little dehydrated.  It is very hard to get all the water in.  Hope everyone else is doing great.  It's Groundhog's day and no matter what the groundhog sees, spring will soon be here and I can't wait!

TEN DAYS POSTOP

Jan 28, 2011

I'm becoming a slave to the scales.  I find myself eagerly awaiting the morning so I can step on and see if there is any progress.  I didn't gain this weight overnight and it will not disappear overnight but I still look for that drop in poundage in hopes that this tool WILL be working for me.  I continue thinking that I may be the only person it does not work for.  All-in-all, things are going well here.  I sometimes think I am hungry when I truly believe I am just bored.  I have been getting about 800-900 calories and 60-80 protein grams daily.  Haven't had the energy to tackle the treadmill yet but hoping to start slowly on Monday.  I am down 10 pounds from the morning of my surgery.

One week postop

Jan 26, 2011

It is 1 week postop.  I'm feeling pretty well, still tired and tender in the middle.  Had my drain removed yesterday.  I had gained 9 pounds of fluid while in the hospital and suddenly lost it by yesterday then today when i weighed myself I lost 6 pounds more pounds, which are from the day I left for the hospital.  YAY!  I was suprised.  I have felt so swollen and bloated since the surgery.  Hopefully this is starting me on the losing side.  I have 1 more week of full sugar free liquids then next Tuesday I can start on the blended/pureed foods.  Is it going to be as good as it sounds?  I think, if I close my eyes, it will be fabulous.  LOL  I can't imagine some foods blending to look too appealing.

Hope everyone is doing well and staying warm.  We had snow today, but not as much as predicted.

Needing to vent!

Jan 23, 2011

I'm like many others who chose to tell only a select few about having surgery.  I am SO tired of hearing "you don't need to do that, just join Weight Watchers or Jenny Craig and get more exercise."  AHHHHHHHHHHHhhhhhh   Do these people not pay attention to all the countless times I have tried these diets only to lose 20-30 pounds then gain back 25-40?  I mean REALLY?!!!!!    It's like they have completely forgotten that I am an intelligent person who researches EVERYTHING, and that I would never go into something this serious blindly or without thought.  It happened again last night and I just needed to VENT!  Thank you for listening.  I will settle down now.

This is postop day 4.  Nothing tastes good.  I have had GNC protein drinks, which aren't too bad, but they are not terribly appealing and it takes a long time to get them down.  I need the protein so I keep pushing it.  I am drinking water and I have not had any diet pop for a week now.  That was what I dreaded most.  I do enjoy some broth now and then because something warm makes it feel more like a meal.  Can't wait to get rid of the JP drain.  It is uncomfortable and I just am tired of dealing with it.  All-in-all, things are going well.

Hope you all have had a great weekend!

Back home

Jan 21, 2011

I got home from the hospital yesterday evening.  I have had a protein shake this morning and water.  Keeping track of in ins and outs.  Walked on the treadmill slowly for 5 minutes this morning and hope to do it again this afternoon and evening.  Not pushing myself too hard but trying to keep moving.  I have a bit of a cold that I picked up while in the hospital.  yuck!  Haven't taken any pain medicine since I got home because I was given a RX for Lortab elixir and I just cann't drink that stuff.  They gave it to me in the hospital and it made me puke.  I tried some children's Tylenol this morning but it was also too syrupy sweet and I knew I would not be able to keep it down.  Gotta say the abdominal pain isn't so bad.  The headache is very bothersome.  I'm going to tough it out.  Hope everyone is having a great weekened.

Home from the hospital...

Jan 21, 2011

Well, I got through my surgery and everything went pretty well.  No matter how much you think you are prepared it is still a bit of a shock.  I understand much better how difficult it will be to get in the 64 ounces of fluid daily in addition to the 60 grams of protein.  I have a Jackson-Pratt drain in place and will be returning to the doctor's office on Tuesday to have that removed.  It is probably the most annoying thing, that and the coughing and cold I seem to have picked up.  I have 6 incision sites, including the drain site.  They look good, but the drain is awful looking.  Can't wait to get that one out.  Everyone said how difficult watching television would be after the surgery because you cannot eat most of what is advertised.  I gotta say none of it is terribly appealing to me right now.  Hope it remains that way.  I'm so glad I've been reading so many blogs on here.  It prepared me for the initial gain of weight when I got home.  The day of surgery I was down 4 pounds  from the 2 day clear liquid diet.  Getting home from the hospital I got right on those scales and was up 9 pounds. YIKES!  Obviously I have a lot of swelling and expect that to go away pretty quickly.  For now, I'm just taking it all day-by-day.
