Question about returning to work after WLS
Oct 31, 2010
I had my psych evaluation last Thursday and she approved me for the surgery (was everyone else nervous about this). I still have 2 more appointments with my family physician before my information will be sent to the insurance company. My next appointment is in 2 weeks. I am reading daily the success (and sometimes failure) stories from people who have had WLS. One of my concerns is how soon I can go back to work. I am a medical transcriptionist and I work from home. I do not have set hours but am required to do a certain amount of work daily. It is a great job and certainly one that will be easier to return to work early. I really hope to have the vertical sleeve gastrectomy, but my insurance has not approved that yet, so if they don't approve it by January I will be opting for the gastric bypass. Is it unreasonable to think I can work again in 1 week? I would love to save my vacation time for something fun after I've lost some of this weight. :-) Anyway it goes, I'm so excited to be doing something positive to be healthier and feel better!

Feeling a little discouraged
Oct 19, 2010
I am still working on getting everything done for my approval. This waiting process is difficult but it does allow me to continue to research and be well prepared. I had my nutrition class, have completed 4 of my 6 flow sheets from the doctor's office and my psych evaluation is next week. I am feeling a little discouraged. My grandson told me his mom's gastric band surgery is not working and that I shouldn't get it. She had surgery 3 weeks ago and is really struggling because she still has hunger and cravings. A girl at work told me her brother had gastric band surgery 4 years ago and it didn't work for him either. While I am hoping to have a different surgery altogether, it is discouraging to hear these bad results so close to home. I wonder if some people think this is a "quick fix" and not a tool to help them achieve their goal. I suspect this is the case all too often. I wonder what the true success rate is?

Appt scheduled
Sep 21, 2010
I am a newbie here. I have been going through my insurance required appointments with my family physician and have completed 3 of 6. My appointment with the surgeon is scheduled for next week and I scheduled my appointment for the required psych evaluation next month. I am excited about getting this surgery and feeling healthier and more energetic. Wish I could do it tomorrow! I was in the hospital just a couple of weeks ago with chest pain and I am more convinced than ever that I need this surgery to be healthier. I found this site and have been reading the posts and looking at the before and after pictures and hoping one day soon that will be ME!
