My first entry

Oct 12, 2011

Oh wow, I have a blog. I've never had one of these before.

I'm trying to keep track of questions to ask my surgeon or the nutritionist or whomever on my next visit. This seems like a good place to start!

1) Give me some ideas for high protein foods of various consistencies. If we can avoid cottage cheese, I'm all for it. The smell of it makes me gag now. I've heard tastes change post-op, so if  it does, good, but for now... other options, please.

2) If I do get to have this surgery in December, I'm expecting bad weather. I live halfway up a hill. Am I allowed to walk up and down the hill as exercise or do I have to stick to flat surfaces? That'll be lots of laps around the yard/house, but just want to be safe! No going back to the hospital for a broken something or other!

3) Let's estimate the time I need off of work. In the meantime, going to do my darndest to miss as few sessions as possible to make sure I meet the first semester minimums ASAP and then everything after that is just bonus time!

4) Am I going to need someone to stay with me post-op full time, or can I get away with having someone come in and check on me? I wonder if that's my preference...going to have to remind myself to keep a pillow over my tummy. It makes me wonder what my cats will do when they don't have Mama's jelly belly to use as a trampoline anymore...hmmmm...

5) Can I really get this done in December? If we can't, and we have to wait until June when I'm on summer break....does that mean I have to go through this whole pre-op process of appointments and tests again, or... do I suck it up and burn 2-3 weeks of sick time?

6) How soon can I get back to the gym? Driving? Lifting? (Wait...check pre-op manual, might have read that in there). Is it obsessive if I'm reading part of the pre-op manual every night before bed so that I have my new lifestyle changes down COLD by surgery time?

7) How soon after surgery do I resume the chewable birth control for hormone control?

8) I remember something about my mom needing to have a BM before discharge, in addition to the other stuff, but she had RnY. Am I going to need a BM before I get to go home?

9) Can I still get the stomach flu with most of my stomach removed? Or is that more of an intestinal thing?

10) Check into if chewable calcium citrate exists.

11) Make a list of my support group for post-op. Spare house-keys? Am I going to want visitors in the hospital?

12) Should I call the surgeon to get my next appointment a week earlier? I'm scheduled for 7 weeks instead of 6 and it looks like I'm going to have almost everything done super early...so why wait?

13) Endo appointment on the 1st - if PCOS, are we medicating or waiting for the surgery before treating?

14) Get 2 notebooks tomorrow - food journal and exercise journal. Going to want to write down things, especially with the liquid and post-op, to make sure I'm getting enough proteins and liquids.

15) Find out where Dad bought that protein mix and buy more. It's yummy!

16) Multipart question: When do you do the leak test? How common are leaks? What's the range of time during which I can develop a leak? What are some symptoms to look for if I think I have a leak?

17) Walk me through the 2-3 weeks pre-op. What tests will I be getting? What am I looking at in terms of normal daily activities continuing while on the liquid protein diet?
