doing better

Apr 19, 2011

Had my surgery on November 15, 2010. When Dr. Keith opened me up, he found a Kevlar shield had grown into my intestines and had to be cut out. He also decided to repair my giant ventral hernia. All in all, there was just a whole lot of cutting. An operation that should have lasted 1 1/2 hours took 4 1/2 hours. After the fourth day, I was sent home. Was there for 2 days before my suture line split open and a quart of blood flowed onto the floor of my home. An ambulance took me from Enid to Norman. They had to pack my abdomen with sandbags to keep me from bleeding to death. This was the day before Thanksgiving and the traffic was a nightmare for the poor driver. But he got me to Norman Regional. I was so sick by that time that I was struggling, gasping for breath. My lungs were full of fluid. I was operated on three more times because an infection had set up in my abdomen, medically resistant staph infection. I was in the hospital until December 7th. Went home for a month and my legs began to swell up like someone with elephantitus. I did nothing all day except sit in a chair. I even slept in the chair. My potty chair was right there, but I was so weak it took all my strength to go from chair to potty chair. Twice I fell and the rescue squad had to help me back up. Then, in January, my suture line split open again. A wound vac was implanted. It has taken this long for my wound to heal so I can get out and enjoy what's left of my life. All the joy I should have felt as the pounds just fell off me was lost because I was too sick to care about anything. Tomorrow will be a better day. It has to be because yesterday was like being in the darkest pit of Hell.
