Completion of 6th month with PCP

Apr 08, 2009

Well, today I completed my 6th month of supervised dieting under my PCP with about as much success as I am use to when dieting.  I've been playing  with the same 8 lbs for 6 months - up and down.  Today was an UP!  Which made the scales reflect a whopping .8 lbs loss!
So now I am just waiting for someone from my surgeons office to call me and let me know what is next.  They've told me for sometime that everything else is in order so hopefully they will be able to submit it to insurance immediately.  I am curious how far out my surgeon is scheduling appointments now.  The last time I heard anything about it he was scheduling 3 months out.  I am hoping that is not the case now.  I'd like to get this going ASAP.  I will update when I know more.

Happy St. Pats 09

Mar 17, 2009

Things are going okay but it just seems to be going slow.  I had my 6th appointment with my PCP today so that means 5 months completed.  My next, and hopefully final, appointment is April 8th.  I think everything is going on schedule although I am still not convinced that I've seen the dietitian enough for the requirements but I guess I will find out when they apply me.  They seem to think once was enough - so crossing my fingers. I am still working out faithfully about 3 times a week for about 45 minutes in the gym.  Part of the time is on the bike and part of it is on the weight machines - feels good to use those muscles.  My weight is barely going down.  I've been trying to practice eating a lot of protein and a little different eating routine which doesn't seem to be working so well for me.  Weight watchers was always something that was successful (at least for a while) for me and I might just focus on that for a while so I will drop a few pounds.  Portion control is an issue for me so hopefully the band will help with that.  Anyway, that's all that is new - other than I am back in school and that is kickin' my butt!  Take care and I'll be back as soon as something eventful happens or April 8th gets here - which ever comes first.  :)

2 Months And Counting....

Feb 19, 2009

Another week has come and gone.  I had several appointments this week beginning with my 5th appointment with my doctor to equal 4 months of physician supervised dieting which will be completed in mid-April. (say YEAAAA!)

This morning I saw Dr. S and have completed my visits with him until after I'm banded.  This afternoon I attended my first support group meeting and finally got to meet one of my favorite band buddies!

I can't say I've been losing much weight in the past months but at least I am losing a little and not gaining.  I am faithful about the gym and even though the gym is in the town I work in, not the one I live in, I still make the drive to the gym once on the week end, too.

Most everything else is uneventful but I consider that to be a good thing.

I love getting emails from all of you so keep in touch and let me know how things are going for you.

Uneventful Update

Jan 31, 2009

I had a screwed-up last week and it threw me off my game.  We took my vehicle in for some minor work and found out it needed some major work.  I had to leave it for a week and drove my mom's while I was without.  Problem was, I left my gym bag with my tennis shoes in mine, as well as everything else, and I could't get there during their business hours to get my stuff back - so I blew off the gym.  I could have gone today but now I've gotten back into a lazy routine.  Monday I will get back in to it.

I also received my order today from Unjury.  I got the trial samples of protein powder.  I haven't tried any yet but plan to over this next week.  I also have some sugar-free flavor syrups to try in some protein shakes.  Unjury was pretty cool - they sent some tasty recipes with the samples.

I need to make dropping a few pounds a PRIORITY over the next 2 weeks.  I would like to have had a 5 lb loss when I go back for my Feb. doctor visit.  I have not been losing and I can't say my heart has been in to trying.  It's one thing to know what you're doing wrong but it's another to stop doing what you know is wrong!  Ugggghhh.

Half Way There - Hopefully

Jan 16, 2009

I saw my primary care physician today for my monthly appointment.  I was up by 1 pound.  Not too thrilled with that but then again it could have been worse over the holidays.  I'm sure it will be off soon.  I'm on the downhill slide now in my 6 months so I think that might get my momentum geared up.

We had the building monthly birthday snack day today at work.  I didn't touch the sweets - but that's not unusual - they're not my first love.  I'd much rather have the high fat and calorie cream cheesy dips, the meatballs, etc.  So-since it was MY birthday celebration this month I had a plate of most of my favorites for lunch.  Overall it was not too bad and I made it work with the rest of my food for the day.  I'm going back to the gym tomorrow and I plan to attempt that machine again but with a little more caution.

Fast 2 Days

Jan 10, 2009

Yesterday I met with Dr. S again.  We agreed I need to concentrate on eliminating bad habits and planning better ahead of time for meals.  I will go back to see him again in Feb.

After I left his office I stopped off at a little store to try my first true protein mix.  I will just say that if you like drinking Fleets prep kits you will love what I tasted!!  In the mean time I've talked to a couple of friends who have some experience with protein mix and they never drink it mixed with water.  With that encouraging info I will attempt the protein samples again soon and try it in something more substantial than H2O.

So -- today I went to the gym and long story short I pulled a muscle in my chest, neck, shoulder area -if that makes any sense.  The good news is that about 30 mintues after I took 4 Advil I was finally able to convince myself it was NOT a heart attack but a pulled muscle.  The bad news is I left the gym in such a panic I only did half my work out.  It pretty much feels back to normal tonight and I'm sure I'll live to see another protein drink!

PS - And guess which machine it was?  That overhead arm machine that I thought looked like it could outsmart me.

First Day Back At The Gym...

Jan 06, 2009

...so what if it was just for 30 min.

I can't believe I forgot how to use some of those machines.  It wasn't as bad as walking into the place for the very first time, but close!  I was trying to figure out just how long it's been since I last had a membership and I think it was in 2001.  I didn't do too bad today I guess.  I rode the stationary bike for 10 minutes to warm up and then moved on to a few of the machines.  I did about 3 or 4 leg machines, something for the waist and 1 overhead thingie.  Next time I am going to test out the arm machines and see if I can master them again.  They looked tricky today and I really wasn't in the mood to be outsmarted by a weight machine. Anyway, I left feeling pretty darn good for a 'stiff old granny type'.

TIME TO GO BACK TO THE GYM

Jan 02, 2009

Happy New Year.  The new year, thanks to an employee discount, gave me the opportunity to join the gym for half price for the whole year.  It's been 8 or 9 years since I stepped foot in the gym and thought this would be good to take advantage of.  Actually, I have gone to Curves off and on during the past few years which is pretty good but I am excited to get back to this gym with more choices of equipment.  I'm hoping for the obvious but also am looking forward to increasing my range of motion and endurance.  I feel like a stiff old lady!

I've also been doing a little reading from a few books that Dr. S recommended.  I see him again on Friday.  I decided to take the whole day off and since I didn't take much time off through the holidays I am really looking forward to just moving at my own pace all day long.

Wish me luck as I drag into the gym one day this week to get back into the swing of things.

PSYCH CONSULT TODAY

Dec 20, 2008

Although I have no idea what  constitutes a 'good' appointment with the weight loss psychologist, I am pretty sure mine turned out just fine.  I thought it was interesting.  He approved me for surgery, although that doesn't mean I am approved by my insurance company yet but it is one step closer.   I will see him again in January.  I have a few books to begin reading and I am sure I will have some questions for him.  We talked a little about my concern about emotional eating - is this my main problem or not - since I've never felt that it was but was worried I was just not realizing it.  He said there are different degrees of emotional eating.  Probably to some degree I do have some but a higher probability is likely from patterns I've developed both from family eating habits as I was growing up and poor management/planning of meal time practices now.  As I keep a journal of feelings at meal times over the next month I hope to pay closer attention to what is going on in this little head of mine related to need vs want/craving.  I guess I will get some good practice in considering Christmas is less than 5 days away!

The rest of the day was wayyy worth the morning drive to SMMC- my best friend and I shopped till we dropped at malls all the drive home and didn't finish the day until almost 11pm.

DIETITIAN APPOINTMENT

Dec 05, 2008

OK, so I've been informed that the dietitian is known in simpler terms as the "NUT" - short for nutritionist.  I like it - I'm using it.

I saw the NUT today.  She was very good and informative, not to mention very personable.  I was afraid it might end up being a review of all the things I've already learned a million times regarding calories, carbs, sugars, etc. but to my pleasant surprise it was education regarding the nutrition for after I'm banded....what to eat the first 24 hours, 3 days, week, etc. and how to progress from day 1 to a year down the road.  The booklet she gave me is simple and straight to the point.  I assumed (and you know what they say about that) that I would be required to see her a few more times but she said I did not need to return to her but that another NUT would be in touch after surgery.  I verified with Dr. Hoehn's office and they agree that I'm only required to have one appointment. SO Yippeee.  A week from tomorrow I see Dr. Sabapathy for my first appointment with him.  So far I am pleased with everything in this process.
