Surgery Specialty Hospitals of America Bariatric Center

Dr. Miranda is great as a surgeon. Not very personable, but an excellent surgeon. He is very careful to explain the risks of the surgery and stresses the aftercare program.
However, follow up care is an issue if you live in San Antonio. He is based in Houston and comes to San Antonio only to perform surgeries. I've had issues since surgery and I feel like he totally pushed me aside when they came up. I won't see him any longer. I now see Dr. Alanis (his partner). He's also in Houston, but he seems to be more into the follow up portion than Dr. Miranda. Dr. Alanis also comes to San Antonio for surgeries, but he also sees post-ops while he's here.
Advise for future patients, get a LOCAL surgeon. If you need them and they're a couple of hundred miles away, it's a problem. And find out via local support groups, who a good Gastroenterologist is in your town.

My first impression of him, was wow. He looks so young and serious. I wondered why such seriousness he didn't even crack a smile. I asked the staff if he was always so serious they told me he does smile he just is like that at times. Well he finally cracked a smile and that broke the ice. He is extremely knowledgable and knows his stuff, but most of all enjoys doing these surgeries and seeing his patients change right before his own eyes. I could tell in his eyes and could feel his excitment and commitment in his words. There is nothing I can say that I don't like about him he is great. He explained every thing to the tiniest detail and was open for any of my questions and answered them all. He is very honest. What everyone needs to know about Dr Fernando Miranda is that he is a sweetheart and don't let his seriousness scare you like it did at first me. He does smile and with time after you get to know him he will smile more. He does address all the risk of surgery at the first visit and is very frank, but he does reassure you these are things that can happen and it is his responsibilities to keep you informed. He is very firm on the aftercare and will give you suggestions and ideas for a succesfull aftercare. I rate him a 10+. He takes great care of his patients and believe me when I say that. He demands for his patients to be given the highest of care. I was really impressed when he came over to the hospital to do his daily visit and say my bandage was not changed he got so upset with the nurses and right infront of me told the nurse that this bandage needed to have been changed and that this was not unacceptable and wanted this to brought to the attention of the head of the hospital. That his patients needed to be taken better care of I said to myself you go Dr Miranda, know thats my doctor. He is the best!!!!!!!
He is good at everything, he came over and asked how I was and was so concerned. I love my Dr he is great. He even gave me a thumbs up and with a smile at that!!!

When I first met Dr. Alanis I was impressed with his knowledge and overall experience with WLS, he didn't leave anything out. He covered the benefits, risks involved, what was actually going to be done during the surgery..he covered it all. At first I was on the fence about having the surgery in the first place but once I met him and his staff, I felt reassured that he knew what he was doing and I was going to be in good hands. The NeWeigh Staff is excellent, everyone is very caring and they want to help you throughout your journey. NeWeigh has "little sisters" that have already had WLS and you can always go to them for questions or if you just need to talk. NeWeigh also provides a weekly support group and they even have holiday parties for all their patients, this way you can meet other people in different stages on their WLS journey. I would recommend him to anyone who was in need of the surgery b/c of his experience. After the surgery, Dr. Alanis checked up on me several times to see how I was doing and that showed that he really cared and wanted to make sure I was recovering well.

My first impression of Dr. Miranda came across as a caring Dr. ready to help.
I still feel the same about Dr. Miranda.
The staff is wonderful and helpful.
I have no complaints.
He is a caring Dr.
Dr. Miranda feels very strong about aftercare and stronly recommends it.
Yes
He will explain surgery risks and answer any questions a patient might have in detail.

I had my surgery done by Dr. Alanis on Aug 4th. From the 1st meeting and through the process, he and his staff is the best. If anyone, I mean anyone is looking for a Dr, stop your search here. The before and after care you get is the best. My wife had surgery with another doctor here in Houston, she will be attending the aftercare programs with me at Neweigh. All I can say is, Neweigh is a great place for WLS. If you have any questions, email me.

Dr. Alanis appears extremely thorough. He answered many of my questions before I could ask them. He also explains answers so they are understood in lay terms. This surgeon took the time to investigate my medical history, even the seemingly unimportant details. Nutrition information was stressed, and a commitment to aftercare support is mandatory for success. Surgical risks were discussed in depth. I only wish every physician I've encountered was this competent. At this time, my rating is a 9. Will update again post op.

My first impression of Dr. Alanis was that he seemed Caring, Comforting, Knowledgeable and very very Professional. I also met his assistant Claudia from the NeWeigh Staff and she was the BEST!!! She was always there to answer all my questions and still is till this day. I know that any person who is interestd in the Gastric Bypass and is choosing Dr. Alanis as their surgeon, is making a Great choice and will be pleased with him and all their Pre and Post-Op Care! NeWeigh has structured aftrcare programs in San Antonio & Houston. I also would like to say that all the staff that cared for me at Innova Hospital in San Antonio are the Best... I have had previous surgery and hospital stay's, but none as pleasing and comforting as my time spent at Innova Hospital. The Nursing Staff, the Respiratory Therapist's, and all the Dr.s there checked up on me on an regular hourly basis to make sure everything was perfect and I am glad they were there for me!
