I met with Dr. Thayer and his "team" on 2/23/00. While I did not spend a lot of time with him on this first visity, I was impressed with both him and his entire office staff. They made the beginning process very easy - one long visit to see the surgeon, nutritionist and psychologist. Tiring, but worth it, I thought, instead of travelling back and forth.

They have a very structured program to get through the entire process, from required support group attendence BEFORE surgery to diet and emotional counseling after surgery.

The risks (all of them) are provided in a video that is required watching (also during your first appointment). Dr. Thayer and his office staff stress an informed consent - you really must have a good idea what this is all about and be realistic about your goals.

A competent surgeon with an excellent bedside manner would be perfection. Dr. Thayer seems very congenial and many other patients have attested to his competence. However, in a surgeon, I'll take competence anytime over charm. I'm not going to marry the guy; I just want to have a good outcome.

By the way, Dr. Thayer is NOT located in Plymouth. He is connected with the Newton-Wellesly Hospital in Newton, MA.

as a prospective patient, you are scheduled for a 3 hr visit, which includes time with the staff psychologist, nutritionist and the surgeon. that way you don't spend all kinds of time making separate appointments.

dr. thayer was very upfront and honest. he really wanted me to wait longer, but there was a cancellation only 10 days after my initial consultation and after i convinced him that i was well informed about the surgery and was ready to have it as soon as possible, he agreed to let me take that surgery date. sally scheduled me and did all the work for the approval. cindy, the staff psychologist was wonderful and made me feel very comfortable. she was a great help in convincing dr. thayer i was a good candidate and ready for the surgery asap.

there is a very active support group that meets once a month and follow-up visits with the dr and his staff are mandatory.

i went to dr. thayer after seeing another surgeon. although i hear he is an excellent surgeon, dr. ameri in stoneham, ma had absolutely NO aftercare to speak of. he was willing to do the surgery but i knew i needed to have a structured program to help me succeed down the road-surgery is just the beginning.

I met with Dr. Robinson today at Brigham and Womens Hospital. I was not impressed. The staff was unorganised and he did not really have compassion for fat people. I felt like he did not think I was fat enough and wanted to hand me a diet plan. If he only knew what it is like to live in a body that is 100 pounds over weight.

I also got the impression that he was really into the intricacies of the surgical procedures more than the care of the patients. I left the appointment and made an appointment with Dr. Thayer after reading comments by other people on this website.

Dr. Thayer is a sweetheart. My first impression of him is as a kind, funny man with a wonderful sense of humor. His office staff is as upbeat and caring as he is. I also met with the nutritionist and psychologist on my first visit as well and everyone was very thorough in explaining everything and in stressing the importance of going to support group meetings and scheduled appointments after surgery. All of the benefits and risks of having surgery were addressed at this meeting and I was required to watch a short video expaining them as well. So far, I would rate Dr. Thayer a 10+ ...... he has both surgical competence and a great personality.

First impression, kind and caring man. His staff is wonderful and at my first appointment they were very thorough explaining benefits, risks and how my life would change after surgery. Aftercare includes monthly support group meetings. Still pre-op, so I will update later on the care I receive during & after my surgery.

Can I say anything more? Dr. Thayer has been wonderful, he is highly skilled and competent. He has a wonderful sense whimsy, and makes his patients feel very at-ease. I have been very pleased with the quality of care I have received and the way the staff involves themselves personally in my success. Some people might find his very blunt manner offensive, but I enjoyed his candor as I knew it was well-intentioned

My first impression of Dr. Thayer was he was the kindest man I have met.

i still think he is the best he really knows how to listen. His office staff is very supportive and helpful. Ithink that everybody who goes to Dr. thayer should realize that they have gotten themselves a very good doctor. The one thing he will tell you is that you are the one that controls the weight lose and only you. YOu HAVE TO stick to and listen to everything the doctor tells you. Just by the little I know about him I would give him a ten.

My first impression of Dr. Thayer is that he is a wonderfully understanding and compassionate man. The office staff were very helpful, had a delightful sense of humor, and put you at ease immediately. I honestly cannot think of a single negative thing to say about Dr. Thayer and his staff. They just make you feel so good about yourself and what you are going to do, and the life that you will be able to have back. I liked the fact that when I spoke about my intention of trying to get pregnant after surgery, both the staff and the doctor were very frank about how long I needed to wait and what would happen if I didn't. They also made me promise not to get pregnant too soon or else they would not recommend me for surgery. I understand that you need to wait the year to year and a half in order for your body to heal, to shed the weight, get in shape, and be able to provide nutritionally for your baby. I would rate his office and staff as A-1 all the way. I spoke to several other pre-ops and quite a few post-ops while waiting, and no one had anything negative to say about this office. I found the whole process very informational.

I thought he is a really nice person, very professional, and funny.

The office staff is very friendly.

I would refer patients at any time.

What I didn't like was the wait period but you do see the pshycologist, nutrisionist, and the Dr all in one day and they do tell you to be prepared for a three hour consultation. It is well the wait.
